Default Bandwidth - Speed question

Hi all,

Generally speaking, I do not expect high volume transfers between my sites and my clients. In fact I will be surprized if I reach 50GB/mo.
My concern is that once or twice in a month, some hundreds of my clients will need to download the same relatively big file (10 to 20 MB), and this will happen in a relatively small time window (3 to 4 hours).
Will a VPS be able to handle this burst?
If not, what options do I have? (apart from setting a maximum number of concurrent downloads in code)

Thank you

I would say a VPS hosting account might get the job done. I will recommend the highest VPS plan though.

Later, if your website gets big enough, it will demand enough resources and may force you to upgrade to a dedicated server. But to start with, a VPS plan should be good enough.

Hope that helps, and if you have any other questions - please feel free to ask. Thanks!

Thank you Jennifer,

Could you please let me know a few things about your plans?
1) What is the public uplink for each physical server that hosts vps plans?
2) Is there a guaranteed mininum bps for each VPS?
3) Are the above numbers different for Hyper-V or Semi-Dedicated?
4) I see that the high Hyper-V plan costs more the the Semi-Dedicated although I would expect the oposite. Shoud I assume that it is also more powerful and I should prefer it over a Semi-Dedicated for resource intensive applications?
5) Is it safe to assume that (server RAM)/(VPS RAM) equals to Accounts per Server ratio?

Thanks again,
Antony

PS
Please, excuse me if my questions sound generic and not directly related to your services, but until recently I was a dedicated desktop developer and my knowledge on the Web-Thing is still far from comprehensive!

Hello Antony,

I have answered your questions below:-

1) What is the public uplink for each physical server that hosts vps plans?
Ans: Each server in our Datacenter is setup on 100 Mbps connection.

2) Is there a guaranteed mininum bps for each VPS?
Ans: You will get 10-15 Mbps guaranteed speed for your VPS.

3) Are the above numbers different for Hyper-V or Semi-Dedicated?
Ans: Its same for Hyper-V and Semi-Dedicated Servers.

4) I see that the high Hyper-V plan costs more the the Semi-Dedicated although I would expect the oposite. Shoud I assume that it is also more powerful and I should prefer it over a Semi-Dedicated for resource intensive applications?
Ans: Hyper is more powerful as it is based on hardware virtualization. The semi dedicated server requires only a single installation of Windows, while on the hyper-v node ,each virtual server requires its own windows installation (and license). Semi Dedicated Server is Windows 2003 based whereas Hyper-v is a Windows 2008 VPS.

5) Is it safe to assume that (server RAM)/(VPS RAM) equals to Accounts per Server ratio?
Ans: This applies to only Semi Dedicated Server and Hyper-V VPS.

Please feel free to post if you have any questions.
