Question Basic advice on semi dedi setup

Based on the belief that correct server setup lead to a better website experience, I want to get the best advice about initial VPS linux setup. Coming from a shared hosting, I'm pretty new to some of the extra features on cPanel WHM. Clicking buttons and hoping fore the best, seems to be a recipe for a bad learning experience,... So here are some questions,
  1. I've got a new domain with eukhost, how do I make this the main server domain?
  2. Where exactly do I enter my (welcome mail) IP nos: and name servers in the WHM? *
  3. Are there any further tweaks with DNS I should implement for best results?
  4. If I'm not reselling web space, do I need to setup quotas and packages?
  5. I do eventually need to transfer 2 other domains/sites but these are my own.

* I entered my account information IP address in the Basic cPanel/WHM Setup page in the primary nameserver - add IP address field, but this faied to register. Also tried this in the Networking Setup link Assign an ip for a new nameserver: This also failed to register the IP

Thanks for your advice

Hello,

Following are the answers to your questions

Quote:
1. I've got a new domain with eukhost, how do I make this the main server domain?
As you are the owner of the VPS (root level access) you can directly create the new domain under root user. Also we can set the hostname of your VPS using new domain. The hostname you want to set should be FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) like server.domainname.com or vps.domainname.com, where domainname.com should be hosted on your VPS.

2. Where exactly do I enter my (welcome mail) IP nos: and name servers in the WHM?
There is no need to configure anything on WHM as we already do that necessary configurations while setting up VPS.

3. Are there any further tweaks with DNS I should implement for best results?
We would suggest to use private nameservers for more performance instead of using the nameservers which we have provided in welcome email.

4. If I'm not reselling web space, do I need to setup quotas and packages?
If you are going to host your private websites there is no need to setup package or quotas for the domains.

5. I do eventually need to transfer 2 other domains/sites but these are my own.
We can do the migration of the domains for you. Just drop an email to support[at]eukhost[dot]com with migration request.

Hello vzAddict.

Thank-you very much for your detailed advice. Yep, I've been busy putting it all together over the last days, but I just wanted to pop back here and say thanks for your helpful input. It all makes a difference!
