Default DNS hostname and name servers

Hello there, had my VPS Hosting account setup today and i was just wondering how to set up the hostname and name servers.

I am alittle confused how to do an intial set up.. Is there a tutorial how to set up the server to use my domain name.

Is the server preconfigured to work or do i need to alter anything. Really i would like to use my name servers but im getting alittle confused how to do it all.

If someone could give a a quick run down that would be grand.

Regards,
Chris

Hello Chris,

I have located your VPS Hosting. Did you by any chance perform administration tasks from Virtuozzo? If so what was it? Please come over on the live-chat we have and contact the VPS Hosting department.

You sounds a bit like me when I first got a VPS Hosting. Not entirely sure what on earth was going on. But you soon pick it up.

I'm guessing the nameservers thing has been sorted now? If not, you'll need to register them with the domain registrar (this will be in the control panel for your current domain and doens't cost anything) and assign them to the IPs of your VPS Hosting.

ahh okies well i havent done it yet, im going to leave the hostname as VPS Hosting.fusionticket.co.uk. I have the name servers set to ns1 and ns2.fusionticket.co.uk in the WHM. im assuming its just the registra i need to do hopefully.

I can do pretty much most things, I just havent ventured into the realms of DNS yet... so my DNS knowledge is a little weak. I need to do a crash course really then i should be more upto speed...

Im assuming that where my domain name is registered that i put my ip's as the name servers so when someone types in my domain name, the registrar will point the domain in the direction of my name servers which will send the correct IP and extention back to the browser?

Correct me if i wrong, once i get my head round it, it will all fall into place and make alot more sense

cheers and thanks for the help, best support i have had with a hosting provider todate!

Right this makes sense now... I cant register them myself, eNom access panel doents have that feature, Im going to ask eukhost as they are a enom reseller if they can do it.

Hi Chris,

You won't be able to register nameservers for .co.uk domains from enom. All you need to do is set your .co.uk domains nameservers as following :-

91.186.254.254--ns1.e-u-k.co.uk
91.186.254.253--ns2.e-u-k.co.uk

You can do this from "Edit DNS Zone" section for your .co.uk domain and thats it.

IP and domain mentioned above are just an example of how it should be done.

You can suggest one of our Dedicated Servers to your university

I think you'll find it's DNS cache Mark. And if it's anything like the DNS servers in Manchester, it will take up to 24 hours at least to change.

well my tunneler propagated pretty much instantly literarly minutes as for my my proxyed connection still hasnt propergated.

I want the uni to go for Open DNS thats who i normaly use but like alot of school or Uni network admins they are either not sure what they are doing or cant be bothered.

Here's another question, I am correct in thinking that now my domain and name servers point to my dedicated server, any other domain name can just set there name servers to ns1.fusionticket.co.uk and not need to use the ip address? (if that makes sense)

ns1 now point to 92.48.85.64 for me. And yes, you just get them to point to ns1.fusionticket.co.uk and not the IP.
