FTP Erratic Speeds

I have just finished updating a number of WordPress blogs on my VPS. This involves deleting then uploading hundreds of files. Part of the time the process was fast but at other times deleting or uploading became slow and sometmes paused for a period; a couple of times it stopped, requiring a reconection to get things moving again. Things got worse for each subsequent blog that I updated.
My question is, how can I maintain good speeds when using FTP?

Sometimes I have connection problems / poor speed if I don't have "Enable Passive FTP" active. Have you tried toggling this option in your FTP client?

Thanks. Passive mode is on by default so I doubt that it causes the problem.

FTP upload/download speed also depends upon the Internet speed of local ISP. I would suggest you to check your local Internet speed in case if you are still facing problem with uploading / downloading files.

Depending on your ISP if your doing excessive downloading / uploading at peak times you may have your bandwidth throttled. You would have to refer to each indivdual ISP for their policy.

My ISP is Zen and they are excellent and never throttle. It's only FTP to the server that's the problem, speeds elsewhere are great.
I am sure it's a server problem because FTPing can cause the load to increase (to 11.0 at one point) on the server and indeed, during the uploading FTP crashed and automagically restarted.

I have checked the ftp configuration of your vps and made some changes in the configuration file where ever necessary. If the system is more loaded than the value set for MaxLoad then it will not allow to upload/download, this may result in ftp crash. I have also increased the values of MaxIdleTime and MaxClientsPerIP.
These tweaks should help in improving the ftp performance on your VPS. I would request to send an email at vps@eukhost.com if the problem still persists.

I gather that the next version of WordPress will incorporate an automatic upgrade option which, as I understand it, downloads a zip/gz file then does everything else via shell commands, so presumably won't use FTP. Details here if anyone is interested.
So I will be using FTP when 2.7 is ready and then I don't need to worry about it anymore which is good .

You could always do it by sftp - I use winscp, which is free - WinSCP :: Free SFTP and FTP client for Windows

I imagine if there were FTP problems then there would be the same problems with SFTP.

Hopefully the changes to the FTP config have worked .
