Default IP address of email sender?

Hi all,

I now have my VPS Hosting setup as follows:-

IP1 > NS1 & primary domain hosting
IP2 > NS2
IP3 > Shared hosting (currently only two sites hosted here).

I got the third IP so that I could keep my main domain totally seperate from the shared hosting accounts. My problem is that if I send an email from a domain on IP3 and then check the headers of that email it shows the sending IP as being IP1 and there is no mention of IP3.

What I don't want to happen is for my primary IP to be blacklisted due to dodgy emails being sent from the shared domains on IP3.

I guess at the moment there is only one instance of qmail and this is running on the server as a whole and hence is tied to the primary IP? Is it possible to somehow set SMTP (qmail) to send from IP3?

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

I would check with support for this (by opening a ticket) but at the moment unfortunately abuse by one of the shared accounts will result in your primary IP being blocked. Is the third IP assigned to the shared accounts or is it defaulting to the primary?

Hi,

All the shared accounts have physical hosting on the third IP so in that respect they shouldn't have any ties to my main domain (on the primary IP). I suppose one way around this would simply be to stop the shared hosting accounts from using SMTP and just force them to use their respective ISP's SMTP service. This is what many hosts seem to do with shared hosting accounts. I'm still interested to know if this is possible though.

Cheers,

Chris.

Hmmm, I'm not to sure on that one as I have never done it myself personally. In theory it should work but I'm not sure of all the practical implications of it. Maybe if no one replies here with a definitive answer LiveChat off the main website hosting (eukhost.com) might be able to give you a quick answer .

Yes I probably will do that if no one from eUK replies (I'm sure they will though!! )

I'm actually in the middle of working nights at the moment anyway and none of those shared domains are actually live yet so I'll wait till I'm next off and chase it up then.

I was thinking I could probably stop them using SMTP for outgoing mail but Horde would still use it and I'd have the same problem. And I can't really stop them using webmail.

It wouldn't be a problem but my main domain has to have a reliable email server for sending out software registration keys (hence the reason I got the VPS Hosting in the first place) so trying to keep the email side of things between the primary and shared sites is quite important. I've just managed to get the email setup so I can reliably get into Hotmail and Yahoo and I don't want to screw that up again!!
