Joomla 1.5.2 FTP Layer
Hi, anybody know how to get the FTP layer in Joomla 1.5.2 to work, I keep getting errors which ever FTP settings I use. I can connect with other FTP programs with no problem. Joomla needs this FTP layer active to install components and modules etc, any help would be appreciated.
I have a few Joomla 1.0.15 sites working perfectly, they do not use a FTP layer.

Hi,
Apologies for replying late, this thread wasn't ignored.. I've been reading several forums & have also asked the Joomla Devs to take a look into this. The problem you are facing with the Joomla's FTP Layer feature is a BUG within the specific release [1.5.2].. It seems that you have a VPS plan with us, you can downgrade/reinstall the Joomla application to 1.0.x & it'd work fine...
Also, regarding your question, the FTP Layer feature is nothing special, but it just allows file operations (such as installing Extensions or updating the main configuration file) without having to make all the folders and files writable. This has been an issue on Linux and other Unix based platforms in respect of file permissions. This makes the site admin's life a lot easier and increases security of the site..
You can check the write status of relevant folders by going to " Help->System Info" and then in the sub-menu to "Directory Permissions". With the FTP Layer enabled even if all directories are red, Joomla! will operate smoothly. NOTE: the FTP layer is not required on a Windows host/server.

Thanks for the reply Rock, I know that Joomla 1.0.15 works on your servers I have 3 sites up and working, I have used Joomla 1.xxxx for several years (Mambo in the beginning) and know about file permissions etc.
The reason I am testing your VPS at the moment is to see if it is compatible with Joomla 1.5.2. Before I signed up for a VPS account I said it was to test the suitability of your servers for Joomla 1.5.2.
There is no bug in 1.5.2 causing the problem with the FTP layer, it works perfectly on some servers, it depends on the server configuration, and has been present since 1.5 RC1.
Also I do not want to downgrade to 1.xxx. The reason being there is no future development with this version, and components etc are now being developed for 1.5.xx and with the FTP layer working the installations are much more secure.
On the Joomla forums you will find people having this problem, but at the same time the majority of users are not.
I have 1 Joomla 1.5.2 test site on my VPS account, it seems to work perfectly except for the FTP layer, I could live with that if it did not prevent me from installing some components that I install on all my sites, com_extplorer in particular, this is a great component for working with files from Joomla administrator without logging in to Power Panel.
As I am sure you know Joomla is the number one open source CMS in the world, any hosting service that cannot run the latest version is going to lose out to those that can.
I hope that a solution can be found, as I find the VPS to be fast and your customer service to be very good, also I don't want the hassel of looking for another good hosting service.
Bill
PS Windows, Microsoft no blxxxy way, they have already had to much of my money

indaloman i am having issues with joomla too, i am having a reseller that is getting mad with having new joomla set ups all over the server ! from my 4 year experience in hosting i am telling you that joomla and the previus version mambo gave me nightmares according security reasons. Also the MAIN problem is that with this CMS you call it No1 it leads every N00b without any knowledge of basic php or mysql to having complex web sites and modules for nothing . Rent a Coder and built a php web site for your needs.
I am about to make an announcement for my server and tell that WE ARE NOT SUPPORTING joomla anymore. i got enough $hitt with this cms

Netspace, Joomla is no problem, as I say in the post above, I have three Joomla 1.0.15 sites running perfectly, it is the FTP set up that fails in Joomla 1.5.2. on EUK Host servers.
Joomla is not just number 1 with noobs as you say, google “Joomla Awards” and see why it is number 1. Professionals in PHP have voted it Number 1 open source CMS for years.
Check this link Joomla! - Spotlight on Successful Joomla! Sites and see who is using Joomla, including The United Nations Regional Information Centre for Western Europe, and I don’t think they use it because it’s free, it’s because it’s the best CMS for the job.
If you do ban Joomla from “your server” that should dramatically cut your customer base, eventually, probably to zero, that should stop them bothering you.
I thought that this forum was for constructive advice from other users and system admin, not negative ill informed statements.
PS, Are you using VPS for reselling? Not good for other VPS users. I believe re-seller accounts should only be on Dedicated Servers, then they only affect themselves.

Please do not argue whether Joomla is good or bad within this thread. This topic is specifically for support, and for no other purpose. If users continue to argue about Joomla, I will lock the topic.
If you are interested however in discussing Joomla, please find the appropriate section on the eUKhost forums to post in.
Thank you

I agree with you WelshTom, but I have still not found or been offered a solution to this problem, it’s not a bug as Rock suggests, it is a configuration problem. I have until 5/5/08 when my months trial ends to find a solution or move to a different hosting service that can run Joomla 1.5 properly.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for trying, but it is still not possible to enable FTP layer, also I am now unable to install components! Yesterday I was able to install a gallery and up load pictures with no problems, I also installed a new template. Today I have tried to install several different templates and components, they all fail with the warning “Unable to find install package”

Hi Rock, Scott and anybody else trying to find a solution to this FTP layer problem.
247h has been kind enough to offer space on his dedicated server to test install Joomla 1.5.3, The install went smoothly with no problems, FTP layer connected during install and all features seem to be working OK. I have installed several components and modules and uploaded and installed admin and site templates, all without a problem. The server meets the recommended requirements for Joomla 1.5.3 except register globals is ON and the recommended setting is OFF, this does not affect the usability of Joomla 1.5.3 I believe it is a security thing.
After checking file permissions and ownership on the install on 247h’s server and comparing to my VPS settings, I noticed one difference, public_html on 247h’s server are, owner: account name. Group: nobody. On my VPS public_html has, owner: account name. Group: account name, I changed my VPS to the same settings as 247h’s server, and suprise suprise the FTP layer connected during install, at this point I thought I had found the solution, but sadly not, Joomla 1.5.3 has installed and on the face of it looks to be working OK. The problems show when you try to install components and modules etc, some install OK and work, some will not install, some install and will not work fully.
I will list a few examples: admin and site templates install and work OK, Gallery component Image Browser installs OK uploads pictures OK, but cannot create thumbnails, Extplorer file manager will not install at all, it reports: JFTP::store:Bad response. Warning!-Failed to move file. These problems seem to me to be permission problems, that is what the FTP layer is supposed to overcome, and does on 247h’s server.
If System Administrator requires URls, usernames and passwords I can PM them. As long as 247h leaves the site on his server active.

Hmmmmmm. I had something similar with permissions when I was copying them in... I had set the owner as root and it needed to be different so from what you say, it sounds similar.

Update on Joomla 1.5.3 FTP layer
I have finally cracked it (I think) at least for VPS’s. I set file/folder ownership as in my post above, I changed the apache handler to suphp. Installed Joomla 1.5.3. with no problems FTP layer included, I have installed templates and components including a gallery and Virtuemart 1.1, all work as expected including auto thumbnails. The file manager Extplorer will still not install, but another file manager NinjaXplorer installs and is fully working, uploading, editing, deleting and extracting. I will continue testing this over the next few days, I will update here if I find any more problems.
PS. This is all in Native mode not Legacy.

glad to hear that
I know what sort of good feeling you get when you solve such complicated problem. it doesn't look complicated once sorted

Bill — sent you a PM recently that you have yet to respond to, so thought I'd attract your attention by writing here ...
Yes the test site is still active but I'd like now to move it to my other server to be tested on MYSQL5 & PHP5 — I've sent you the new nameservers in my PM, with a request to change them at your registrar, please?
