Question Linux VPS Hostname reverts

Have been playing around with my Linux VPS for a couple of weeks familiarising myself with it prior to moving my sites over. Before I start I have some minor queries this is the first one.

Have changed my Hostname to midlands.genservices.co.uk but on a number of occassions I have found it has reverted to vps.genservices.co.uk. This seems to happen if the container is restarted from the 'Parallels Power Panel' or a graceful reboot from WHM. The host file is :

# Auto-generated hostname. Please do not remove this comment.
92.48.97.208 midlands.genservices.co.uk midlands vps.genservices.co.uk vps
127.0.0.1 localhost

is this correct.

The container summary also refers to the hostname as vps.genservices.co.uk

Cheers Martyn

Wink

It is happening because you have changed hostname from whm. In case of vps, hostname needs to be set from main node. I have set the hostname to
midlands.genservices.co.uk and corrected the entries in /etc/hosts.

Now it is working fine.
-----------------------------
-bash-3.1# host midlands.genservices.co.uk
midlands.genservices.co.uk has address 92.48.97.208
-----------------------------

Cool

Hi,

The VPS's hostname needs to be changed from the hardware node hence making the changes in the VPS configs itself, if it's changed from within the VPS, the VPS configuration files remain unaffected & the hostname gets reverted back to the old one once the VPS rebooted.
As for now, I can see that the hostname has been changed within the VPS configuration files too... now to what was desired..
Quote:
root@midlands [~]# hostname
midlands.genservices.co.uk

Once more I'm impressed by the quick response.
