Default Linux VPS Hosting and rDNS

Just a question as I'm trying to learn something here..

Dnsreport says "RFC1912 2.1 says you should have a reverse DNS for all your mail servers. It is strongly urged that you have them, as many mailservers will not accept mail from mailservers with no reverse DNS entry.").

Your Linux VPS Hosting hosting comes with WHS/cpanel, and as far as I know it's default DNS template includes an A record for mail.domain.here. Is there any reason that a rDNS record isn't automatically set up for these mail servers (at the time of creation)?

I know I can request them added manually, but this might be a process easily available for automation..

rDNS has to be setup on the name servers which are responsible for the IP range. In this case it's eUKhost's nameservers. You will have to contact support to get the reverse record added, allow 48 hours for it all to propogate through the internet. When you say that an A record already exists, this is most likely to be on the VPS Hosting itself, which won't be the authorative nameserver for the IP range.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

RDNS will be set from the Datacenter, please send a mail to <a href="http://www.eukhost.com/vps-...a>@eukhost.com so that we can set it for you. Also let us know the IP and domain for which you want to set RDNS.

I'm aware that rDNS at the moment needs to be added manually. What I tried to ask is why this process isn't /can't be automated.

Just a bit boring to have to remember to request rDNS for the "mail.domain.new" every time I add a domain to my VPS Hosting..

Hello,

There is no need to set RDNS for every domain. If you set the RDNS to the hostname or to the nameservers of your VPS Hosting, it will be automatically set for the whole VPS Hosting.

Hmm..

I've already requested rDNS for my nameservers, and they're working allright (http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?&ip=87.117.246.196 and http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch...7.117.246.197). Despite that I still recieve the "Reverse DNS entries for MX records" error when I check the domains using my nameservers through dnsreport!?

When I requested rDNS for all the mail servers on a shared IP, I got the answer "You can't set rDNS for multiple domains, please let us know only one domain for which want to set the rDNS" from tech support. Does that mean that in order to not breach the "Reverse DNS entries for MX records" requirement (as per RFC1912), I would need a dedicated IP per domain?

Your VPS Hosting has a particular hostname and that hostname is used as a mailserver. we have shared servers hosting multiple accounts and we don't need to setup rDNS for all domains hosted on the server. rDNS for the hostname is all that you need as there's no other importance of rDNS besides mailing.
