Default New customer - not too impressed.

I took out a windows VPS Hosting that was handed to me about 2:30pm today but is still not in a working state.

MSSQL2005 wasn't installed, that was rectified relatively quickly.

I then found a problem in that I couldn't connect via FTP. When I logged in, I was authenticated but got an error saying home dir not accessible.

Logged a support case (#OVW-69547-341) and the reply came back that this was a router issue with the IP of my VPS Hosting and they had changed the IP address of my VPS Hosting . So my nameservers and any domains I had transferred(luckily no live ones yet) all of sudden would have gone offline.

In addition, all of the DNS records on the VPS Hosting were left with the old IP addresses so i'll have to go and amend all of those myself.

The thing I really don't understand about this IP thing is that the addresses allocated to me were xxx.xxx.xxx.196 & 197 and the new ones are xxx.xxx.xxx.214 & 215 - in the same Class C subnet . So as the addresses are in the same class C subnet, why is changing the address of the server going to fix this - surely it just needs a tweak of the routing tables.

Hello Martyn,

VPS Hosting is quite similar to a Dedicated Server and first 2 - 3 days are lost in setup and customization of the VPS Hosting. This happens with all new customers switching to VPS Hosting hosting as everyone has different requirements and everyone needs some specific softwares to be installed.

I can understand that customers loose time due to such customization but there's nothing that we can do to predict needs of each customer. I am not sure what was wrong with the IP address, but I will ask one of our VPS Hosting support staff to get back to you with explanation.

Selected MSSQL2005express on the original order form so I did kind of expect this to be installed already. As I said though, this was rectified quickly.

Working FTP is a pretty crucial need for transferring a website hosting !

Would really appreciate that and a technical explanation at that please. As I mentioned in original post, the new IP's are in the same class c subnet so any amendment should have been a simple change on the router / routing tables.

To be honest, there was an IP conflict because of which the IP's assigned to your VPS Hosting had to be changed. These changes have now been made in the Plesk control panel as well. It now shows the new & correct IP's assigned to your VPS Hosting. The two domains which you have in your plesk also now show the new IP's.

Your VPS Hosting now does not have any other IP listed anywhere. We apologize for the discomfort & inconvenience caused.

Within the VPS Hosting forum it does seem like every now and again there is an new unhappy customer, I believe this is because they are not getting what they thought. It seems majority of new VPS Hosting customer would be used to shared hosting, where everything is setup upfront, but with a VPS Hosting its the customers responsibility to get it configured how they require.

The guys at eUKHost to help a lot for those who don't know or unsure, but I think somewhere it needs to be made clear that a VPS Hosting is not like shared hosting, it's one step closer towards having a dedicated server.

my 2 pennies worth...

Same thing happened with one of our popular forum member ( JC ). He was unhappy for few days after he moved from Reseller plan to VPS Hosting, but now he is very happy and he has learnt to compile Apache and do many things through SSH.

Learning Linux is always helpful and who knows what opportunity may come your way. It wont be possible for us to tell new customers that VPS Hosting is complex, as that will make us loose potential customers.

I need to think of something to get rid of these frequent posts coming from new customers.

With my VPS Hosting, it didn't help there was a problem with the server initially but after the migration everything has gone fine. One of the main things is working your way round WHM with all the extra options. Would it be worth setting up a trial example of WHM or something similar which allows people to have a play before hand? It would help them get used to the new environment before they are thrown in at the deepend?

I know it would have helped me as I would have known where things were and how to do several common things.
