Default Problem adding nameserver A record

Hi all,

I just signed up for a VPS Hosting account yesterday and am currently trying to get my Dedicated Server set up. In WHM, under 'Basic cPanel/WHM Setup', I'm trying to set up my primary and secondary nameservers.

I've clicked Assign Ip Address, and that seemed to work fine. However, when I click on 'Add an A entry for this nameserver', I get the following:

Found your nameserver to be: ns1.mydomain.com
Found your domain name to be: mydomain.com
Found your nameserver name to be: ns1
Found your nameserver ip to be: 0

Now obviously I've changed my domain name there, but the thing that's bothering me is the last line - shouldn't that have an IP address rather than just 0?

I've tried a few things but every time I try it it just says the same thing, am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Pete

Hi Pete,

We have done all the necessary settings on your VPS Hosting server. Only you have to register following nameservers at your registrar.
====
ns1.codeandpixels.co.uk >> 87.117.236.16
ns2.codeandpixels.co.uk >> 87.117.236.17
====
Once you have registered the nameservers at your registrar your nameservers will start responding.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

Fantastic, thanks for your help. Out of interest, what did you do to get it working properly? I'm trying to learn as much as I can about server administration and it would be handy to know!

Hello Pete,

I have manually added the nameservers entry from shell and restarted the DNS service. You can also add it from your end using following command.
====
/scripts/adddns --domain domainname --ip www.xxx.yyy.zzz
====

Oh ok, I think I'll steer clear of SSH for now until I learn a bit more about it! How come it didn't work when I tried to do it through WHM?

Hello Pete,

May be you were using incorrect nameservers due to which its showing error while adding nameservers through WHM. To check the exact problem we require WHM login details. You can email login details to <a href="http://www.eukhost.com/vps-...a>@eukhost.com so that we can investigate further.

It might be because they weren't registered with the domain registrar. I know WHM checks the nameservers are valid and pointing to the right IPs before it allows you to add them. You can override this check in settings somewhere and that could have possibly been the issue.

Ah that would make sense, everything seems to be working fine now anyway which is the main thing.
