Unhappy Problems with Email

Anybody getting problems with email on VPS Hosting. Mine stopped working on Sunday, all were queued on the server, but if you checked under mail queue manger it showed zero emails queued, if you checked under ConfigServer Mail Queues it showed 90+ emails queued, I tried to send them manually but no luck. Support eventually fixed the problem, but all queued emails were lost, today the same problem has returned, only this time some of the lost emails from Sunday have appeared in the queue, they are marked 3d and 4d old.
Any ideas as to what is causing this problem, as I cannot stay with this host if the email system is so unreliable and eats emails only to regurgitate them a few days later, to late to be of any use.

Hello Bill,

The VPS Hosting Support team is already working on the ticket which you have raised. You have to give some time for them to investigate and reply back to you with a solution to it.

Nick, I know I have to give support time to look at the problem, I wrote here to see if other users have had the same problem and if it has been cured permanently or not because all queued emails were apparently lost for two days before reappearing today. When support fixed the problem on Sunday they informed me that there were no emails left queued on the server, as they were not delivered to me I assumed they were all lost, until today that is when they mysteriously reappeared.
Update: Support has just contacted me to say “mail issue on your VPS Hosting is fixed. Mails are working fine now” Problem is 90+ emails have disappeared again, some spam, some important, I have checked all pop3 mail accounts and my Yahoo accounts not one of the queued emails have been delivered.
If fixing this problem deletes all queued emails, there should be some way of backing them up first. I cannot run a professional service if all emails held up on the server are lost when support fix the problem, this is the second time in three days that support have “fixed” the problem and all queued emails have been lost. What was (is) the problem? I have not changed anything, support just say it’s fixed, no explanation of what caused the problem or why I have lost some important emails.
After sorting some initial teething problems getting Joomla 1.5 working I have been happy with my VPS Hosting including support, but losing important emails twice in three days is not acceptable, support told me it was fixed on Sunday, obviously it was not, is this fix going to work or am I going to lose more emails in the next few days.

I just spoke to support. On deeper investigation it was found that the exim conf of this particular version of cPanel had a problem of mail queing. W had earlier corrected this mistake. However, the mail-server's configuration file got overwritten which caused these mails to disappear. Required attributes have been set upon it now. The config files wont get over-written. So there wont be a problem like this again.

Hello,

I have a similar problem with email on VPS like indaloman had. Luckily, my client's website is not live yet but they don't seem to be too happy with the fact they can't get their emails sent by my PHP script while registering or resetting password.

Basically, sometimes the email do work, sometimes it does not and the email messages are queued.

In my case, I submitted a ticket that was solved. Later, when the problem occured again and I submitted a ticket, I didn't hear from support again.

Now, before I launch the server for my customer in a couple of days, I'd like to be 100% sure the email is working perfectly.
Can you please help me to solve this problem, eUK-Nick?

Martin

I have checked and found following Error in email logs:
Quote:
local_delivery defer (-29): User 0 set for local_delivery transport is on the never_users list
It seems that some of your PHP mail scripts are using phpmail() function to send email OR the Cpanel notifications which were sent as root were stuck due to above error. As per the about error, Exim will not send emails using any user which is listed in never_users list (for your VPS its root). I have removed the root user from this list and sent emails forcefully; now mail queue is empty now.

Kindly let us know if we can further assist you.

Hello,

I'm afraid it is still not working from 100%.
The website front-end (the more important part) uses SMTP to send mail, not PHP's mail() function.

I always receive emails from the server to my @googlemail.com email, however, emails to @seznam.cz
are sometimes queued, as I can see in cPanel/WHM and emails to @ymail.com and @yahoo.com
are queued or are not delivered AT ALL (neighter to Inbox nor Spam folder) and are not queued on server.

Unfortunately, my client has NEVER received an email from Registration and Reset My Password page until now.
Their email, as****h@yahoo.com, has been queued on the server until now (17 minutes).

So it seems the problem is somewhere else.

Could you please re-check this issue again?

Thank you.

Martin

Hello Martin,

I have asked Sebastian to have a thorough look once again. He will reply back to the ticket which you mentioned in an earlier post of yours. Thank you for your patience.

Hello Nick,

I haven't heard from Sebastian yet. Is he going to do something with the email issue?
My client is loosing their nerves and I don't like look like a fool.
And, I have this bad feeling that if it is not sorted by tomorrow mid afternoon, my client
will ask me to find some other hosting company for their web project(s). Just letting
you know what's very likely to happen judging by all the phone calls and emails I'm getting
from my client.

Martin

Hello Sebastian,

Thank you for your help and advise.

I've removed the PHP script redirecting to a different address. This helped. Now it works smoother but still, the emails get queued from time to time...
The "queue run" seems to deliver all mail at all times. Can we run this more othen than every 1 hour or is it too CPU consuming?

Thank you,

Martin

I would say depending on the load on your VPS you could run the queue more often and it shouldn't be too much of an issue - you can change this from WHM.
