Default Rsync?

Can anyone give me a step-by step guide to configure my VPS to backup to a linux based server at home (accessed via a domain namer and dyndns)

My scant knowledge leads me to believe I need to configure an rsync server at home, then setup rsync on the vps, but I'm not sure where to start

Cheers

Hi,
It depends what you want to backup. If you're running cPanel, you can backup the account data via ftp by configuring backups in WHM. Alternatively you could set up Rsync as you suggest but I personally don't have any experience of this.

I'm wanting the sites (files and mySQL) to be backed up weekly. I understand that rsync is the most bandwidth efficient way to do it

Yep, rsync would be the most efficient but all I was thinking is that it is easier to set up an FTP server at home than one which does rsync (i.e. some network hard drives can act as FTP servers). And if you don't use a lot of bandwidth on your VPS currently, I wouldn't worry about the bandwidth too much. I backup my accounts nightly and am still well under my bandwidth limit at the end of the month.

FTP would certainly be an option, as I have a windows FTP server running already for another purpose.

I suppose it's a combination of efficiency and being stubborn about not letting it beat me that makes me want to rsync

Hi Iain,

Please refer following thread from our forum :-

Recovering the cpanel Server from Crashed HDD With Rsync

Martin has included detailed information on how to configure backup of a cpanel VPS and how to restore same backup as and when needed.
