Default Server not responding - 4th time for a week.

Here is reply from support:

"We have checked few sites on your vps & non of the site was down. We were able to access all those sites".

It's a crap. In past 6 month, I never had any problems, but now server crushed 4 times for just one week. All sites on my VPS are not responding now.

Hello,

I have been monitoring your vps for some time. At one time the number of connections on port 80 reached to high value which I guess the main reason behind failure of httpd process.

Following changes have been made now in httpd.conf to improve the webserver performance :

Persistent connection has been enabled by changing value of KeepAlive to On and Increased the value of ServerLimit

Apart from this, resolvers of the vps has been changed just to improve the performance of your vps as well as the sites.

Please feel free to update the ticket if you need further assistance.

Unfortunately, my VPS is not responding right now and it is second time for this day.

I didn't change any settings, didn't installed anything new etc, and have no idea what's is going on but I definately don't like it and our customers don't like it as well

Hi,

We have checked status of your VPS. It is up from last 8 hours. We could access all websites hosted on your VPS.

Also, I have verified that all required services are up and working. Still if you are facing the problem then please let us know where exactly you are facing the problem. You can contact VPS support department via live chat support.

Thumbs up Hello

Hello,

Actually our Admins have been monitoring your VPS continuously. If you wish then we can migrate your VPS on a new hardware node for better performance and stability as we experienced slow access speed for your websites.

You will definitely get good performance on the new hardware node, but we won't be able to give you same IPs, as the node is from a different IP subnet. What we can do is migrate your data on to the new hardware node first and then you can point your nameservers, this will ensure that you will not face any downtime. We will not stop your current VPS without your confirmation. We can schedule this migration during the coming weekend.

AlanV has also replied to your ticket, if you would like to proceed with this arrangement, you can get back to us.

I have the same sort of problems, often sites take up to 30 seconds or more to respond, sometimes much longer. I contact support they check and tell me everything is OK and all services are running, load levels are normal and there are no problems. Later when I try to access my sites they are all slow again.
When I first signed up for a VPS it was fast responding, I have the same sites now, but often they are unusable.
I have asked VPS support to monitor my VPS and tell me what the problem is.

We can provide you a new vps on a new node & migrate all your data to the new vps. You will get better performance on the new hardware node, but the ip's will be changed as the same ip's cannot be assigned to the new vps as the new node is from a different subnet. Your data will be migrated to the new vps & then you can make the DNS change, this will result in less downtime. As it is weekend, we can schedule the vps migration now.

If your are willing to get your current vps migrated to a new node, just open ticket on our helpdesk & we will proceed with the migration.

Why would it be quicker on a new node? I would have exactly the same resources. It used to be reasonably quick; it has slowed down during the last few months.
Also the weekend is when I have most time for editing, migrating would possibly make my sites unavailable for the rest of the weekend.
Support has just informed me that the weekly backup is running on the main server and that is what is causing the problem, I was promised several months ago that backups would be performed over night.
This is not the cause of the problems, as they happen at any time during the week. Obviously when a back up is running it will slow the server.

The site will be quicker on a new node as the hardware is new which will surely give a good performance than the old node. All our backups are done on Saturday & Sunday & the backups are done at night time. None of the backups run on weekdays.

The back up was running during the evening, not over night. Below is a email from Scott M dated 31/01/09 promising that back ups would never be run on a Saturday evening.

Dear Bill,

We have stopped backups on main node at this time. I have notified our admins regarding this. I apologize for the inconvenience caused and I also assure you that this mistake will never be repeated in future. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further assistance.

Hello Bill,

We can understand this & what you are saying can be applicable for one vps, but just try to think from our point. We nearly take backups of more than 200 nodes on Saturday & Sunday. The backup on node on which your vps is hosted started at 22:00. I will again make a note of this that this weekly backup is not done before 00:00. I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

I can understand it from your point of view, but look at it from my point of view, I have been having problems with very slow response times from my VPS for the last few months, I have reported this to support, but I still have the same problems, tonight support blames the slow VPS on back ups, something EUKhosts promised last January will never happen again. I asked VPS support to monitor my VPS and let me know what was causing the problem, they said it was the back up, this is not the only problem as it happens at any time not just when there is a back up running.

There are few other vps running on the same node but none of the client has any complaint against their vps performance, but we dont deny what you are saying, thats the reason we offered a new vps on a new node.

At the end of the day we just want our clients to be happy & we welcome all good suggestions from your side.
