upcp and named

For some time I have been noticing that my named server is automatically being restarted in the middle of the night. Initially I could not understand why it is happening but then noticed a pattern - restarts happen around the same time as upcp script runs to update cPanel software (just after 1am).

Not sure if this is to do with the actual update process or the fact that the server CPU utilisation spikes to 4 - 5 (all the other VPSs on the same hardware node are running the same updates at the same time?). Recently I have reverted to manual updates for most of the cPanel components and also optimised memory usage of my VPS, and have seen a decrease in the number of named restarts, but at one point I started thinking that maybe the security of my server had been compromised.

Has anyone seen anything similar?

Cpanel update creates load on on the vps & the cpu consumption also goes up during this process. During upcp if your vps goes out of resources (mainly memory) then named is the first service killed by virtuozzo & the service gets restarted automatically.

Ok, that explains a lot.

Switching from Courier to Dovecot for mail and from BIND to NSD for name servers in addition of careful configuration of httpd and spamd processes has freed up quite a lot of 394MB RAM - the memory utilisation has gone down from about 75% to just over 40% and most of the service problems have disappeared. I'm sure with further mysqld tweaks and maybe replacing OpenSSH with dropbear further memory savings coule be achieved at the cost of loosing some features.
