Default VPS Hosting down since yesterday

Hi,

Tried to post this on the network status forum but it didn't show up so I guess I can't open threads in that forum.

I need somewhere to vent my concerns. Don't know why a network status thread hasn't been automatically created for this problem here, as online support have told me this is affecting many customers.

My VPS Hosting has been down (87.117.201.99) since 14.30 yesterday. After various online chats I am told each time that it will be fixed shortly. I have only now been told that I could have my VPS Hosting moved to new node (no loss of data)... why wasn't I told this at the beginning, or why wasn't it done automatically to minimise the downtime I am experiencing.

I've only just completed moving all my customers over to my VPS Hosting, so I know you'll understand my frustrations here. This move has been described as an upgrade to all my customers, and they complaining and asking to be moved back to my old ISP (not an option for me).

I've opened a ticket requesting a move, but don't know how long that will take.

So who else out there is feeling the pain...

Paul

Hi,

Any idea of when this will be fixed. Just been told I'll have to reload all my website hostings, so don't want to move VPS Hosting unless I have to.

Already had 1 customer saying they'll cancel unless I get mail working soon.

Hope that the problem is fixed soon pkearney. Maybe you could contact support to see if your VPS Hosting will be back online soon or whether you can get it transferred?

Hope that helps .

Hi,

I know it is a hardware issue, but i really isn't helping me that there is no ETA of a fix. I have already lost one customer today.

If you have all my data why can't you move this to another server so I can be up and running now rather than when the hardware gets fixed. In a couple of hours I'll have been without my VPS Hosting for a whole day!

Regards

Paul

You won't have been the only one and this is now the 2nd VPS Hosting server I've had problems with in less than 24 hours.

What would be nice is if instead of having to waste time and energy having to chase eUKhost up for status reports, eUKhost would be pro-active enough to inform its customers via email as soon as they encounter a problem such as this.

Finding my VPS Hosting servers down for hours on end is not the ideal way for me to work out that eUKhost has yet another problem.

I am another customer suffering from the downtime.

I am a bit disappointed with the lack of communication and the seeming lack of contigency plans for this kind of predictable event.

I do think it is unacceptable for a continuous 24 hour service downtime - it is impossible to base services on this kind of hosting.

I am strongly considering moving my hosting to VPS Hosting solutions in the US.

Well there is no comfort in knowing there are others out there in teh same boat, but it does get you thinking about eUKhosts.

I have only just completed a move from Fasthosts to them (on a cost basis). Liked the functionality eUKhosts offer, but if there is downtime like this then I too will have to look elsewhere. Blows any 99.9% relyability out of the water. Lost 1 customer already

Please eUKhosts give us a fix time and more details on what is really happening.

If the fault was down to a hard disk failure than it only makes me ask as to why you would have a setup that can have a single point of failure. Surely you must be running a RAID which can cope with a disk failure and then it just swap it for a new one.

I was also appalled by the lack of professionalism for resolving this issue, next to no communication at all, and when there was it was very vague.

We are facing some Hardware problem with one of our Nodes (IP: 87.117.201.xx), We have already replaced the faulty Hardware and we are going to run FileSystem check so that there will be no Disk failure. As of now we don't have any ETA when servers will be back online as FSCK doesn't give any ETA. Data of every client is safe due to RAID; once FSCK will be completed we will start the VPS Hostinges one by one and we will keep you updated.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the update. It is much better to hear the problem from one of the pros. But why does it take so long to FSCK the new drive(s). A whole day seems a little long to me.

Appreciate the response though as it is very frustrating telling customers you have no idea when something will be fixed.

one canceled VPS Hosting was terminated from this node yesterday and OpenVZ tried to delete data of that VPS Hosting from its /vz/private as well as /vz/tmp

It managed to move its data from /vz/private to /vz/tmp but "rm -rf" command started giving problems while openvz started deleting data from /vz/tmp. This command had maxed out CPU load and 100% resources were assigned to this command. no other command could be executed on the node as rm -rf had taken 100% resources. Soft reboot didnt work as server could not assign any resources to reboot command as well.

We had to make a decision to power cycle server to get rid of this "rm -rf" command but after first power cycle same command started once again. I managed to move rm command to get rid of it after next reboot but on next power cycle server didnt come online. Console was giving errors with /vz partition so /vz was removed from /etc/fstab and then the server came online. We had to then mount /vz again and server was rebooted ( soft reboot ) but this time when it came online there was no data in /etc

once data from /etc is lost then there's nothing much left on the server to be done and we had to start OS reload process on other drive. This server has got capacity for 2 drives only and as we had RAID1 configured so first we had to remove RAID configuration then one drive was used as secondary and a fresh drive was used as primary.

RAID is once again being built now and hopefully the node will come online in next couple of hours.

Mark,

While I appreciate the much delayed insight into what happened, I can't say I'm impressed.

On two occasions now I have had to constantly chase eUKhost up for status whenever one of my VPS Hosting servers had gone down. To say that I am put off by the VPS Hosting product overall is an understatement. It seems flaky at best.

Having said all of that, the dedicated server product we have with you has so far performed well. That includes the instance of VMware Server that we have running on it.

In future I guess I'll just have to think twice before going for another VPS Hosting product.
