VPS hosting - Emails

I am running phpbb on my VPS Hosting. The email notifications are spoadic. Some members recieve them, others don't, others recieve none for a while then recieve a whole batch at once. there seems to be no consistancy. Some members recieve them for a while and then nothing. The recipent seems to make no difference (e.g. some hotmail addresses are recieving OK, others not, same with AOL addresses etc.etc.)

there seems to me to be three possible areas it's going wrong

1 In the phpbb
2 In the server
3 At the recipient's end

but I haven't got a clue as to which. Anybody had similar problems, or can point me in the right direction?

Is the cron job setup correctly for massmailing?

Normally a maximum amount of emails to send is queued (could be 100 at a time).

Generally it is the cron job on your server that controls this and the server setup. I am not an expert, but first thing is checking it sends out the mails correctly.

If the cron is setup correct and the server is setup correct then it only leaves the recipient. Generally it will go to bulk mail and if they will need to whitelist your domain to receive the emails correctly.

Check the dns resolves correctly as well via dnsstuff.com
