Default vps servers and security

I'm a bit of a newbie to VPS Hosting and I have this question.

Are VPS Hosting servers more vulnerable to hacking when compared to shared servers? Do they need a separate managed hardware firewall for additional protection? I've seen some web hosts selling firewall as a add-on package along with their VPS Hosting offering.

Hello,

While setting up shared server we set all the limits and security modules as per our requirement where as VPS Hosting is with default security which comes with an Operating System. Customer has to setup and configure the security as per their needs and requirement. You can contact us if you want us to perform basic security tweaks on the VPS Hosting (If you have Control Panel). Which will include following:

1) Installation of Firewall (CSF)
2) Securing /tmp Partition
3) Securing and optimizing Mysql
4) Scanning VPS Hosting with RKhunter
5) Installation of Mod_Security
6) Disable PHP functions
7) Disable direct root login

All these security tweaks are Free of Cost, you will just have to send a mail to VPS Hosting[at]eukhost.com.

Feel free to check out the Security forum (System Security - UK Web Hosting | Dedicated Server Windows and Linux VPS Hosting Forum) - here are some tutorials on how to secure your serer/VPS Hosting by installing a firewall, and by changing the default SSH port etc
