*UPDATE*

It's been 11 days since this issue arose and I thought it only fair to provide an update.

Since my first post things have been nothing short of excellent with no speed issues noticed at all. I've had greater numbers of members online and things have been zooming along very happily.

I'm still not sure what the problem was at random times over a week or two but I will report that since I've taken to optimize the database in vBulletin via it's control panel, it's been perfect. Again, I can't say if this / what was the problem, but there have been no problems since.

I also think it's only fair to also point out that the performance I'm getting overall from my VPS Hosting is easily the best I've had out of all the providers I've tried in the past.
