Hyper-V stands for hypervisor-based technology. Hyper-V provides real hardware virtualization with heavy isolation from Virtual machines on the physical Dedicated server. VPS created by Hyper-V gives you the complete control and performance exactly like a Windows 2008 dedicated server at a very low price. On Hyper-V server, you can run multiple different operating systems like Windows, Linux etc...

Nice to know about Hyper-V VPS!

Could you please let me know the difference between regular VPS and Hyper-V VPS? Is it just about virtualization tool?

Hi,

Windows VPS is a virtual environment created using software virtualization while Hyper-V is a hardware virtualization platform. You get dedicated RAM on a Hyper-V VPS and other resources similar to a physical dedicated server. Another major difference between the two is the operating system. Windows Semi Dedicated Server comes with Windows server 2003 OS while Hyper-V Windows VPS comes with Windows Server 2008 OS.

I would like to share some more info

Virtuozzo and Hyper-V are totally different Virtualization techniques. Virtuozzo virtualizes the OS while Hyper-V (and VMware, etc) virtualizes the physical server. The VZ server requires only a single installation of Windows, while on the hyper-v server each virtual server requires its own windows installation (and license). A Virtuozzo Windows VPS is less expensive than a Hyper-V Windows VPS.

Okay, so in all, the difference lies in virtualization platform, the OS on main server, the costs and most important the resources allocated. Am I right?

Exactly

Hyper-V servers are found to be more productive [AFAIK] as they perform much better than the other ones

There are various other advantages of going with Hyper-V, The OS, Windows 2008 [which is the best/latest server OS], isnt available with any other virtualization platform..+ read further here

Hmm... does this mean Hyper-V is to Windows like Xen is to Linux? I'm not that well versed in virtualization technologies, but that sounds somewhat similar to what I understand Xen does.

Yes, Hyper-V is Hardware based Virtualization i.e. Virtualization is enabled on hardware before installation of OS.
