Default Where is the i386 folder?

Hi,

I've just signed up with EUK, and am looking to move my hosting over from an existing Windows VPS with another provider.

However, I seem to have fallen at the first hurdle. After logging in, going to the Manage My Server area and trying to install the DNS server, I get a prompt asking me for the Windows CD.

With my previous host, this was mounted as a D drive in the VPS, however I can't find it in the VPS here. How do I do this?

Hi,

I suggest that you email 'vps [at] eukhost.com' regarding this issue. They should be able to provide you with access to the i386 folder.

Thanks for the fast response. Surely it can't be necessary to e-mail support to get access to this, isn't it something that everybody with a Windows VPS will need access to?

Also, a more general question about Virtuozzo hosting -- why is it forbidden to run Windows Update? Do EUK install updates for me automatically somehow?

Can I install any applications that I want (eg. .NET 3.5) or do system apps like that only work if they are provided in the Virtuozzo applications area?

Hello Chris,

I have uploaded i386 Folder in C:\ of your VPS. Please try to install Windows DNS using it now.

Kindly let us know if we can further assist you.

The i386 folder is something that needs to be copied off the Windows Server 2003 CD if I'm correct, but I might be wrong. However, support should be able to get it sorted for you. You can also try live chat if you want. Not everyone requires since some people tend to use the applications that come installed with the Plesk control panel, but I take it you're not using Plesk.

Windows Update is automatically run on the hosting nodes which then takes affect on the hosted VPS servers, but again I'm not too sure here.

General applications should run fine if you have downloaded them off the internet. I have installed .NET 3.5 of my Windows VPS from the Microsoft website with no problems at all.

Yes, i386 is a basic requirement for a Plain VPS. If you order Plesk Control Panel with your VPS; Plesk will take care of DNS configuration and other stuff due to which we do not provide i386 with a VPS, but if a customer requires it we can upload it.

Virtuozzo is an OS based Virtualization in which system files of the VPS are synchronized with the main server system files it's not possible to run Windows Updates on a VPS. Windows updates make changes in the System files of a VPS which late conflicts with the main server and creates problems. We also run regular Virtuozzo updates on main server which automatically updates the VPS.

Yes, you can install .NET Framework 3.5 on your VPS and if you face any problem you can contact us through emails or Live Chat.

BTW Welcome to EUK forums

Ah ok that makes sense, thanks.

Interesting -- are there any applications that cannot be installed on the VPS because of this, or is it only Windows Updates/Service Packs?

I assume that applications that install files to the Windows or System32 folders will still work ok?

Hello,

You can install any applications on the VPS, but make sure that it doesn't update OR modify the existing files which are in System32. Also you can install applications which will register or add new files in System32 and they will work without any problem.

Ok thanks -- I'm thinking specifically about the FastCGI extension for IIS. Hopefully it won't try and do that!

Oh, one other thing -- is there any particular reason why Windows Firewall is disabled by default? Does Virtuozzo provide some firewall capabilities or should I turn Windows Firewall on?

The Windows Default Firewall is turned off by default, you can configure it as per your needs & enable once done. Virtuozzo does provide you with an interface for configuring the Windows Firewall, but I'd recommend doing so from the VPS itself from the RDP console.

Thanks, I'll do that.

On another subject, I just noticed in the T&C's that it states VPS's have a limit of sending 500 emails per hour.

I have a mailing list with about 3000 people on it -- when I want to send them an e-mail, what will happen? Will only the first 500 people receive it, or will the others just be delayed by an hour?

There should not be any problem in sending emails to members of your mailing list. Only thing you need to look after is the load of your VPS while sending the emails. All emails should not try to rush through the VPS at same time.
