Hi,

In order to point your sub-domain to a diffrent server, you need to edit the domain's db file under /var/named/

Edit the file and change the A record of the subdomain to point to the new IP. Like,

from

test IN A YourServerIP
www.test IN A YourServerIP

TO

test IN A NewIP
www.test IN A NewIP

assuming 'test' as your sub-domain. Make sure you restart bind when the changes are done. Restart bind using the command as: /etc/init.d/named restart

With the above settings your sub-domain will entirely work from the new server. If you wish to host the sub-domain from our server and emails from a different one, in that case we will have to create a new zone for the sub-domain. So please raise a ticket with the details like sub-domain name, the new IP and we will do the needful.

Regards,
Jason S.

This is where my bind knowledge from teh extremely basic course i did at uni is failing me

Hi,

I am afraid but that's not possible. Making changes on the server for emails to work from a different server is easy but a separate DNS control for a sub-domain is not possible.

You can setup a CNAME record for a subdomain which will point to a domain hosted on the external server. any changes you make in A records of that particular remote domains will change A records of the subdomain as well.

This may sound confusing but this is how DNS works

am i correct in thinking this subdomain coudl point to a DNS entry?

we are doing this for domain masking with a supplier off ours.

This is possible only by setting up CNAME records for the subdomains on primary DNS Server. This way the destination server ( where CNAME records are pointed ) will have full control of the subdomain.

This is indeed very interesting.. but a little question is popping up in my mind... Why would any one require full access over a subdomain DNS..?
