Default IRC Service

I understand after chatting with your live chat support that you don't permit the use of IRC. I full understand you don't permit this even on dedicated servers however I wanted to understand the exact reason why?

I have a network of website hostings and currently use a chat solution called Chat Blazer, which is costly to buy per X amount of users, and their support ain't much tat. So I was looking for other solutions to use instead of them, without having to blow more cash out on software.

I know some providers don't permit IRC but I've never really understood why.

Why some datacenters are not allow IRC and What is IRC ?
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group (many-to-many) communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client. IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen in late August 1988.

After many years, the human have been created a botnet script to use IRC servers as a attack weapon to another servers. The human also find a security problems in user SSH access and many website hostings, ftp accounts, servers were hacked, this is also most important reason for virus spread over the world and still continue, yes IRC servers required SSH access on normal user to run or usage.

This is why some datacenters are not allow IRC.

NOW!, We believe we can change their idea in the future soon.

WHY?, Because today, WHMSonic can setup IRC server and let it run without giving ssh access to user. WHMSonic have realtime botnet and trojan clean, checking system. The user can't setup botnet to their account, the user can't make mistake unintentionally or purposely with WHMSonic because they can only control their IRC servers from cPanel it is impossible to load any trojan or botnet without ssh.

Extra Security?, Yes, all known php,cgi and shell exploits are using SSH access if the ssh is enabled for user. There is no SSH access with WHMSonic.
If it is the SSH problem then as they detail above from their website hosting, this can be dealt with, so with that in mind is there any reason a dedicated server could have IRC?

This is just a long winded way of me trying to save some cash on max user fee's for commercial software, lol

Is there anyway to stop this forum from taking a website hostings meta tags when posting a URL, looks like I'm making a cheap plug of key words there, lol.

Have you looked at FlashChat Darren's Script Archive ? I had a quick look at Chat Blazer and it seems reasonably similar — there's a demo at FlashChat v4.8.3

It will cost you the princely sum of $5 to buy ...

BTW, if you preview any URL hyperlinks you add to a message, then Switch Editor Mode to reveal the raw HTML, you can edit the string displayed and then re-preview — what I won't know until I submit this reply is whether my edits will be maintained!

I installed PJIRC on one of my SMF forums (which points to a well-known public IRC server) but it's never been very popular with users as we found the interface to be extremely limiting as you have an entry window of one line high that doesn't scroll — when you reach the line end it empties (as you carry on typing). I find this quite disconcerting if I want to write a decent sentence as there's no back-checking before committing a send, but ymmv?

I didn't know about a security hole in FlashChat (and yes it is from Tufat), but there is a newer beta version out now (that I just downloaded) — I didn't check the changelog but here's the link. There are changes showing security updates and I'm also running Mod_Security, so I await any further comments with interest ...

pjirc is always a cheap alternative.. its free and used purely as an example, there are lots of scripts out there that will interface with irc...

if users want versatility then theres nothing stopping them really downloading mirc itself to run from the desktop

Hi 247h,

Tufats Flash chat is fine for small numbers, I used it some years ago. In fact my name is on his thanks list somewhere for supporting him back then in modulising it for a CMS, which I believe was one of the first to have his chat in. The problem is how it handles chat with a handfull of members on-line. It's not built for scalability.

A chat server is much more efficient.

Hi Lance,

Thanks for the very kind offer.

I was hoping for a reply from the main guys here, because the idea of having irc in whm is rather cool. It means easy use for my existing sites and if a client wanted chat it would also be a quick way of reselling the product.

Back top Tufats, I'm not sure if it's different now, but it used to be push and pull chat. So when 20 people are chatting one users post once and it comes back 21 times. now if they all posted at the same time that would be some 400 queries at once. It didn't handle it to well back then.

I do like Tufats radio script that connects to icecast and shoutcast servers, but the fault it has is AS2, it can't handle progressive streams and bottoms out after about 20 to 25 minutes depending on your memory. I found another flash which streams from icecast and shoutcast without the memory leak, I modulised it to work with a MySQL Server database within a CMS (Not yet released).

Anyway, thanks again Lance for your offer, I'll wait to see what EUK's take is on WHMSonics irc addon for whm/cpanel first before making a decision. Ultimately I like to keep control of the services I offer which then allows me to utilise them better with various promotions.
