Moving from SimpleDNS to MS DNS

Problem/Summary

You may have tried moving from SimpleDNS to MS DNS, and are having problems. Most likely you have tried deleting the SimpleDNS service and creating an MS DNS service.
Unfortunately all this does is disassociate the domains from any specific service since SimpleDNS has been removed. The below steps tell you how to associate the domains with with MS DNS Service.

Solution

1.) Go into the Helm Database

a) To login:
You can still edit the MSDE username in DOS by doing:

osql -E -S .\Helm

then

sp_password NULL, 'newpassword', 'helmdbuser'
go

Then you can login with helmdbuser and whatever you chose for newpassword.

2.) Go to the Service Table
3.) Update the SimpleDNS row (whatever the friendly name you called it is) so that the InterfaceID value is 1 instead of 14

Now all you need to do is manually move the zones between the systems.
It''s just a bunch of files though so in theory you can just move the files.

You'll need to recreate the zones beforehand though - you can use DNSCMD.exe to batch create the zones.
