sending emails from a dedicated windows 2003 web server

i have been made reponsible for setting up a webserver which hosts our website.
the sever is a windows 2003 dedicated webserver.
we need to be able to send out emails from our webserver, this is done by using an ASP program which our developer has developed.
i have found some articles on how to setup the smtp server on the web server. but i just needed to know that when the smtp server is setup that all emails sent to any user on our domain wont get routed to our webserver as opposed to our exchange server.
the dedicated server is hosted at a remote site and our exchange server is setup on our LAN.

It depends on what mail server do you use to send emails from your application.

If you just use IIS SMTP service then there is nothing to worry about as it will not route emails on the server without POP3 service.

The problem may happen if you have a MailEnable Mail server configured as it does has SMTP as well as POP3 configured within itself. In that case you will have to go to the config directory of mail enable, open DOMAIN.TAB file in notepad and remove your domains from it. This will allow ME to consider your domain as remote domain and not local.

i was just planning to setup the IIS SMTP service and use that to send the mails. does that still mean i need to edit the Mail enable domain tab?

If you have MailEnable installed then yes, you still have to remove them from the DOMAINS.TAB file.
