Shared MS SQL 2005?

Hi,
I one of win vps customers, overall very happy with the service (and the affiliate programme!).

I was wondering if there are plans for a shared MS SQL server?, I would love to free up the 90MB of ram that my SQL express installation takes up so I could have more available memory.

I'd go for a higher package but theres not much of a memory increase there... so a few quid a month for reliable shared mssql would be great.

Hi Brad,

Your VPS will use more RAM if you try to connect to a MSSQL Server hosted on different network. It won't be poossible for us to setup Dedicated MSSQL server for each windows node and connecting to a MSSQL server outside LAN will create trouble for your windows vps.

I get how connecting outside of the local environment would not be ideal, latency, reliability etc. I don't get how using connection strings pointing to an external IP would cause my VPS memory usage to increase... don't get that at all.

MSSQL itself is resource intensive and it is never ever recommended to have SQL server installed on a VPS unless it has over 1.5 GB of RAM and it is for sure going to cause resources problems for you and your neighbors. However SQL Express is lightest of all.

Actually is not SQL server that eats up the resources, it is the queries that do.. you will understand me better if you run a profiler to check and get a better picture of it.

Having SQL running on remote server is not going to help much as it will cause delays for SQL server to respond which will cause the CPU to go high on your VPS resulting into long queries and they will eventually use extra RAM to speed up the request... and then again one bad database will rule the SQL server and the others will suffer..
