I have IE 3 And every other IE version. I use them to test the rendering of my website. Since I've used CSS and XHTML together, I've managed to get my website to degrade sensibly on older browsers.

To be honest - if people can't be bothered to update their browsers on a reasonable timescale (such as once every couple of years) then I don't see why there should be so much effort put into making a website work with browsers that are older than Windows 98!!!!
For us programmers out there, when you make a program you dont necessarily make it backwards compatible operating system wise right back to the dawn of the time or to versions that are very old now such as Windows 95 so why do we bother doing it with web pages?
Of course suppor the latest versions of the browsers and a few versions before but supporting technology that is well over 10 years old is just pointless in my opinion. Even my oldest computer that has never been connected to the Internet has above IE3 on it and that was bought in 1995!!!

"Why should we bother doing it with web pages?"
Because believe it or not, Netscape 3 is still widely used.

I find that very unlikely - and anyone using netscape 3, an 11 year old browser, really shouldn't be catered for in a general website. Of course, if you design a website with web standards, then even someone using such an antiquated browser (that has next to no css support at all) will be able to view and navigate your site's information logically.

I don't see how Netscape 3 could still be widely used.
Netscape itself is hardly used anyway, so why the hell would anyone be wanting to use an older version of it?

Ive decided only to make websites that go back to IE6 or maybe IE5. Although I always focus on web standards and accessibility so my documents make sense with CSS and images turned off.
I beleive the web and its technologies must move forward, if we all keep making websites that work in browsers as old as IE3 then the people using them are never going to give up and upgrade. In 5 years time are we still going to be making websites for IE3? I seriously hope not, as that would be rediculous.

It's rediculous now.
I agree with the point that we should still make websites compatible with IE6. Alot of places and people still use IE6 as they can't be bothered to upgrade to IE7.

Where have those statistics come from. IE7, IE6, FF 1 and FF2 are the most widely used browsers I believe and make up well over 95% of Internet users browsers I imagine.
Where have you got these statistics / information from that Netscape 3 is still widely used.
As has been said, why should I make a website work with an 11 year old browser when huge companies such as Microsoft withdraw there support for older browsers 2 years after the next release is made!!

Well I believe that the websites I have made will probably degrade quite sensibly in IE5. You were scaring me then and I thought you would say he was still using Windows for Workgroups 1 and the original IE!!

Just looked up the stats from W3C, which I am sure we will agree is a reliable source, and the last stats they have for NS3 were back from 2004 which shows inbetween 0.2% and 0.8% of Internet users using it.
After that stats arn't available as I belive the use dropped to negligiable with the release of Mozilla and the Firefox.
Considering were now in mid 2007 I doubt anymore than 0.01% is using it - therefore I wouldn't count it as widely used! .
Also considering usage of Netscape 7, which is 4 versions later than NS3, in 2004 was only 1.5% at its peak it shows that even the later versions of Netscape arnt widely used.

Not sure why anyone would use such old versions of IE & Netscape. IE in my opinion is a rubbish piece of software for browser compatibility and if Microsoft are such experts then why do they make a browser that still isn't as good as Mozilla Firefox? Anyway, I personally only check my Web templates in IE7, Mozilla Firefox & the latest version of Opera. I would think that people are still using IE6 (and maybe even IE5) but only for those casual surfers who do not have ground-up experience in the Internet, so looking for site compatibility in such older browsers is clearly not necessary. You can check this source for usage shares of browsers and as per usual IE dominates that aspect. Typically, if you design in Mozilla Firefox it usually renders much better in IE.
