Default Creating Private Nameservers

Just bought a reseller account. Want to create my own nameservers with 123-reg where my domains are hosted. Do I just use the 2 IPs from the welcome email I got? Have done this before but cannot remember exactly how. Thanks; Sean.

Add A records for your nameservers from your WHM. You can do so from DNS Functions >> Add a DNS Zone and then put the 2 IPs one by and and your nameservers respectively.

Then open your 123-reg account and click on modify your domain for respective domain. You will see an option named "Manage DNS" which will allow you to register those 2 nameservers for which you added A records from your WHM with us.

I am not 100% sure if that option will work coz 2 of our customers recently tried to do the same and the DNS didn't work even after 24 hours. You can give a try and wait for 24 hours. If the nameservers don't resolve then we can provide you with 2 anonymous nameservers on some of our domains.

You can refer to Nameserver changes at 123reg to know what others have done for such DNS change.

That seams to be working now but took longer than 24 hours. Just wondering if the mail servers for my reseller account are mail.mydomain.com?
This is the way it worked for a WHM/CPANEL reseller account I used to have. Thanks, Sean.

Hello Sean,

Mail server will work with mail.mydomain.com as well as mydomain.com. You can use any one of this for pop3 and smtp server connection.

I am also looking for an anonymous solution. We have set our nameservers to be anonymous, but the reverse lookup of the IP (A or MX) will show the hostname xxyy.eukhost.com This is somewhat not desired in some case.

Do you have any unbranded/anonymous URL?

I can get that sorted for you if you let me know IP of the server on which your account is hosted. In any case the IP allocations are on name of eUKhost LTD so if your customers are intelligent then they can always find your relationship with eukhost but in that case you can clarify to them that eukhost is your vps or dedicated server provider.

I don't think any customers have questioned such thing to any of our resellers as the level of service and security which customers get for their websites makes them trust their resellers and not eukhost directly.

Thanks, I'm on 87.117.201.122 (tucano)

We had initially thought of putting them on NS1.computerics.net - the domain registered by eukhost. But here also two issues: 1)The whois format includes eukhost and 2) We could find details on setting up childnameservers in the domain's CP (access.enom.com).

I agree with you that if one has to find the source, they can. We also do and in fact we did!

However my apprehension is with "a few" third party providers of our customers who could corrupt the customers. We charge more than many other hosting providers, but rhis cost is for providing stability backed by strong experience and knowledgebase. Most of the issues are resolved at our end itself, since most problems are user-generated.

eUKHost is currently our trade secret! When the thirdparty e.g. developers/service providers of our clients etc. (might) come to know about eUKhost, they may question the additional price tag. At times the customers understand but when the third party starts convincing them, it becomes difficult to justify the costs involved in support phone calls and communication etc. to them. Since eukhost has excellent support, they third may corrupt the client on this very basis.

This is the same thing as selling a 2GB reseller package for 5 GBP a month and 20GB shared plan at 2 GBP a month at the same time. How? I know, you know but they don't know.

So changing hostname will help ?

Coz you can add A records on the server for your private nameservers and modify DNS entries of all account by replacing our nameservers with your nameservers.

Changing information on IP subnet wont be possible as that is done from ARIN and they show our information for the network whois to allow anyone to contact us in case of any abuse issues or spamming related problems.

Let me know what you think and we can get things done accordingly.

Yes, that would help a lot. But I doubt if it is easy to change the hostname on production/live servers, specially if there are accounts on that.

Actually this is what we're currently doing - copy/read data from euk dns and put it in our private NS. Then set/request the client domain's NS to our private NS.

RIPE/ARIN will show datacenter's name in IP whois, that is no problem, since we do mention that the datacentre is Rapidswitch. In fact, it reassures customers when we point them to the datacenter website.

What I suggest in favour of reseller accounts in general is:
a) Setup a separate completely anonymous domain for reseller accounts, it could be owned by Rapidswitch.
b) set up corresponding nameservers for these reseller accounts
c) Don't mention eukhost anywhere not even in FTP banners or SMTP headers
d) if somebody wants to report abuse they can do so via your anonymous domain mail (standard contact info on root website of the box) OR via datacenter contacts.

If the reseller is good enough, you'll get more business from him (there is a scope of higher margin from you as compared to others). If he's not, then he's not worth being a reseller in the first place!

The above may already be there, but I'm not aware and in such case, you could ask while signing up if the reseller wants a anonymous setup.

Hope I'm not getting too deep.

We have such setup on Linux cPanel reseller servers but windows is a different brand and windows customers are completely different from cPanel lovers. Resellers offering windows hosting to their customers are ASP.NET webmasters and their customers are typical orthodox corporates who need Microsoft sql databases and MS Access only.

Our new windows server was suppose to come online on Friday but the work load had delayed its setup. We have scheduled its configuration for tomorrow and hopefully we can start filling it from Tuesday morning. I'll let you know about its status while our CRO will go through this thread and take care of hostname modifications.

Thanks a lot, take your time there is no immediate hurry. but plz ensure that others are not inconvenienced for this. Perhaps you could shift my account to the new server, if it is setup as anonymous and if the one customer account I have won't get depleted?

I'll pay the shifting charges. if any.

Yep. New server is a better option but it will have MSSQL 2005 on it. I hope that would be fine for you.

Hardware is getting built right now so server is expected to be online in couple of hours. We will need couple of hours tonight for installation of hosting controller and all other addons.

Hey I signed up because of SQL Server 2005 only! My client had a specific requirement of php5+mysql5+MS SQL 2005. When queried, the sales team replied in all positive. We did not test ourselves, but assumed we had 2005 on current server! Thank god the customer hasn't started deploying his application yet

Thanks for all the effort.

LOL

Things don't look good for me today.

I am quite sure that none of our sales staff would have mentioned MS SQL 2005 previously. We never planned to add MS SQL 2005 due to complications with its licensing.

Hi,
Same here (bad day). Couldn't retrieve the email that mentioned sql 2005. The one I could retrieve does mention "yes we support ms sql on windows" (Sales ID#FGL-92299-826) but not specifically 2005. Apparently some confusion somewhere.

However I am 100% sure someone did say yes to my requirement. Most probably it was the quick chat and maybe my pop-up blocker prevented the send-mail-transcript window. As you said, things are not looking good.

But finally I feel we all will be happy, call it luck or whatever (if successfully migrated to sql 2k5 server).

Hoping for the best, keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed.

Meanwhile, another thing I thought of...
Changing server would also change the IP, so for all customers whose accounts are being moved, there could be a downtime of one or two days while propagation of DNS data is on.

In short, keep both accounts for 3 days, while the DNS propagates worldwide.

You are talking about old days when DNS updates use to take 24 - 72 hours. Now it takes less than 2 hours for DNS to propagate completely.

If your ISP is using DSL technology then the DNS will update on your end within 30 minutes. We will also forward your A records from the old windows server which will reduce the max downtime due to DNS updates to 30 minutes only.

We wont terminate old accounts for a week as most of the times customers messup something before the weekly backup is initiated.

Unfortunately some countries/regions are still on the dark side of the DSL tunnel.

Anyway, anything happening or are we stuck somewhere?

I apologize for the delay in setup of new server. New server is now online and new orders getting filled on it.

You can open a ticket for our support team to setup your account on the new server.
