Default Custom default 404 error page for all users?

I'm talking about creating a default 404 page that will be shown on all user sites. Users will, of course, be able to change the 404 page to one of their own, but I want mine to be shown by default if they choose not to customize it. It should be possible — I've seen other hosts do it — but I can't find any setting in WHM that would allow me to do it.

Anyone?

Hi,

Yes, it is possible, you need to make the following changes into the server's httpd config file :

1) Edit the apache configuration file : vi /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf
2) Search for "ErrorDocument 404 /404.shtml"
3) Change the last part [/404.shtml] to whatever page you want the 404 to be set to for example:
"ErrorDocument 404 http://domain.com/my404.html"
or
"ErrorDocument 404 /home/CustErr/404.html"

4) Save the file & exit.
5) Restart the apache server/service [service httpd restart].

If you face any problem, please contact us on Live Chat Or at our HelpDesk (support[@]eukhost.com).

This sounds like a useful tip. Thanks, Ralf! I suppose this also works regardless of what control panel you use? Seems like it since you're editing the httpd.conf file directly.

Thanks for the guide, eUK-Ralf! That does exactly what I wanted it to. Users will still be able to set their own custom error pages, though, right?

Hi,

Yes, you can customize the required error page as per your requirement with option "Error Pages" in cPanel under section Advanced. Select the domain with the help drop down option and click on the error page you want to edit. These changes will be effective after your click on Save.

Also, You can do it with the help of .htaccess file. To customize you need to add error document into your .htaccess file under the document root of the domain.

ErrorDocument code /filename.ext

You need to replace code with error code and filename.ext with the file name which you want to load while error occur.

You can add this error document setting into your .htaccess file under your website document root (public_html) . If you still have any further problem then please drop an email to support[@]eukhost.com and we will look into it.
