I apologize to all members involved in this thread due to problem created by the Turkish kid. He added a refresh redirect code in the thread to redirect visitors on a virus prone website.

I managed to remove those posts from database as it was not allowing me to delete those posts from here. My mozilla browser blocks popups so the virus didn't make any problems for me. If you had any problems due to it then please accept my sincere apologies.

You need to learn to live in world of Virus. I don't see any problem with viruses as I know how to get rid of those. I allowed my Nephew to use my computer at home for couple of hours and he stopped only after the system was under full control of Hundred's Spywares and Viruses.

I got everything sorted within an hour using professional version of System Mechanics ( iolo.com ) so you really don't need to reload your system even if you get worst virus on your system.

I can live with them, I use Norton Internet Security which deletes them in 2 ticks. It's just a bit annoying, thats all.

I don't prefer to keep active anti virus on my machine as anti virus programs take too many resources on Windows.

You can never get any virus on your machine if you use only Mozilla Firefox with proper security settings in it. IE is gateway for all types of vulnerabilities available on the web.

No server is 100% secure and that goes for both owned or hosting companies.

Keep regular backups of your website and let your host worry about security Thats what you pay them for

I'm shocked to here someone has had a good experience of Norton Internet Security. I installed it, decided the free alternitives were way better, tried to uninstall and it caused me no end of problems, not allowing certain files to be deleted that its install program left behind and it seems to be such a resource hog compared to others!

But if you having good experiences with it, I suppose it is each to his own .

And Firefox is a lot safer than IE, traditionally due to the fact that more people in the past have used IE over firefox therefore IE is targetted more. That coupled with the fact Firefox probably learn from IEs woeful security mistakes.

Firefox might be a bit futher behind than IE with regards to the latest features and technogies being incorporated into it but it is a lot more secure!!

And the person that posted that refresh code, well I'm sure those that know me know what I think of things like that! And for those that don't know me, I don't hold them in high regard (to say the VERY least!).

Well, it did make one of my PC's run slow, so I tried to add some extra RAM. My PC is wierd in the way that you have to take it's case off, and open it like a book to get to everything. I did it all correctly and now.... the RAM didn't fit and I have one majorly f***ed up PC.

let me do some advertising of System Mechanics over here. System Mechanics was recommended to me by some geeks of Security world and so far I've found it to be the best.

you can try evaluation version for a month to see if its good or not. you can download it from iolo.com

I think I will go and take a look at that one. I have to admit I don't think I have used it before. I will have a look and see if it is better than what I have got and if it gives me any benefits over what I have.

I will report back and tell you how I get on with it!

Hello All,
Suggestion for Desktop PCs:

Disk space is ample these days. So
a) Get a Disk Cloning software (eg. symantec ghost, Acronis Partition) of your choice. I have found all of them to be equally good

b) Keep all your installed software on one drive and Data on another, software copies on third.
c) When the system is clean an OK, Create a copy of the main (installed software) partition and keep it as a file on another partition or Burn it to a CD/DVD.

d) Frequently, say once in a few months (this time depends on your average MTBF - mean time between failure), update/recreate the partition image file.

e) If something goes wrong, just re-install from the partition image/ghost/clone. Takes about 30 minutes for a 20GB disk. Again, time depends on hardware and cpu speed.

This is a good way to allow kids to do whatever they want. JUst rememeber to backup your data after a few days as well so that in case of an attack/infection, you don't lose the data itself.

I have previously had problems with Norton Ghost not restoring the image properly. Has anyone else that uses Norton Ghost had problems with it?

Which version of Norton Ghost? IIRC, I had problems with Ghost 8.0, especially in it recognising USB drives and possibly that it was difficult to create a bootable CD, but to be honest I no longer remember having to restore an image to discover whether it worked in anger! I still have Ghost 9.0 installed on one PC but again, have not tried it to restore an image — sorry! Now I'm even more pleased I switched to Acronis TrueImage ...

Acronis is a great product, not horrendously expensive and it really does work — I've used it with Windows 2003 Server and Windows Small Business Server 2003, booting up from a CD and using it in its graphical DOS shell (never tried installing it on either of those platforms, but it's great in Windows XP). Anyway, it's been used in anger on production machinery and does restores a whole lot faster than using Microsoft's preferred methods or re-installing their OSs and then from tape backups.

If you plan to discuss this at length I suggest you start a new thread, or ask Mark to split this discussion to a new thread.

I will do then. Wasn't intended on being a new discussion but seems to be turning that way.

The very few times I have needed a restore it hasn't worked - but it has been extreamely frustrating. The one time you need something to do what it is supposed to so you don't lose hours of work and it fails to work!!

Default Any more problems?

I'm thinking of maybe getting reseller hosting from eUKhost and wondered if you guys had had any more trouble since your last posts regarding it? Although I agree about Norton (it hogs resources), it doesn't help me know about any reseller issues.

I use a resellers account at work for our websites and haven't experienced any problems myself on 'puma'.

Hello jc8654,
I'm afraid they're no good.

Instead, they're the best! And trust me, I'm telling you and everyone genuinely. I am not a client of eukHost so it will not do any good to me singing their song. But from my experience and communication with their tech support, I can tell you they are way above the rest. When something happens, they know the whats or whys, contrary to many others who rely on hit and trial. Ups and Downs are inevitable in day to day life of any business, what matters is how you come out in case of problems.

DPS, Some older versions of ghost had problems with Long file names on NTFS. They worked fine for WIndowz 98/FAT32. Newer versions work great provided you don't run them/create an image when windows is running! Do it all in DOS Mode.
