MX records

I can't seem to get the MX record settings right.
I want to direct all mail sent to user@abc.org to user@xyz.com without setting up email accounts for user@abc.org

I've made MX changes to that effect from the cPanel, and when checked using http://www.mxtoolbox.com/ all seems to be well.

But when I send a test email to me@abc.org it doesn't get to me@xyz.com, it gets rejected by my smtp server with the message that 'user doesn't exist' etc.

What am I doing wrong?

If you need to forward all emails for me@abc.org to me@xyz.com, you need to set a forwarder for this email account. You can set the forwarder from your Cpanel.(Assuming you are on linux hosting plan).
If you change the MX record for domain, then all mail for that domain would route through new mail server and it wont forward the emails until any forwarder is setup on that account.

Yes what I want is for any email to anyone at abc to go to xyz, using the same user name.
So that if an email is to fred@abc to get sent to fred@xyz.

Naturally there has to be an account for fred@xyz, but isn't that what changing the MX record is for? So that all mail gets sent to a different mail server with a different domain part.

Maybe I've got this all wrong.

Mail exchanger(MX) record is a type of resource record in the Domain Name System (DNS) specifying how Internet e-mail should be routed. MX records point to the servers that should receive e-mail, and their priority relative to each other.

What you are looking for can be achieved via Domain Forwarder.
In addition to forwarding individual mail accounts, you can forward all email from one domain to another using this domain forwarder option. You can add it via your Cpanel --> Emails --> Forwarders Section.

What was confusing me was that there's no need for accounts at abc.
So you can have no email accounts at all at abc, and all email will get forwarded to xyz, where the accounts you want to use are set up.

Works a treat.
