Unhappy FTP service problem

Hi. I'm using my main ftp account and can log in OK using filezilla or the DOS window. However I cannot get a listing from the server. For example, from a DOS window:
ftp> ls
200 PORT command successful
(long wait)
425 Could not open data connection to port 3127: Connection timed out
ftp >

The port number changes each time. I can create a directory but not upload files.

This is the first time I've tried to connect using ftp.

Any idea what's up?

This had happened to me last week, access to ftp was cut off due to security problems with cpanel. I contacted support with my url and they re-activated my ftp upon request.

p.s., could also be your personal firewall, try turning it off for a moment and see if you can connect through ftp.

Thanks for the reply Manny. It's not my firewall so I've contacted support and they've already replied for more info - very impressive!

firewall running on our servers will block your IP if you attempt to connect with invalid password for more than 2 attempts.

that must be the reason you are not able to connect to FTP service coz we have enabled FTP access on all servers and there should be no other reason for not being able to FTP.

Regarding the blocking, does it just block one IP address or a range around them and how long does it block it for?

I've had the problem with login attempts, hence me asking. I thought it might just be my connection so used a remote server to do a ping and traceroute and it came back failing as well. It's on the same university network as me but has a different IP so I would have thought there wouldn't be a problem...

Only your IP is blocked if you fail to connect in 2 hits. We don't block whole subnet.

IPs remain in blocked list for 2 days and then they get flushed.

Mark, the account wasn't blocked - I could log in successfully but could not get a directory listing.

The solution was to set the host as domain.com, not ftp.domain.com (which is what it says on the 'Configure FTP client' screens ).

Thaks for the help

This seems to be something new to me. It should not make any difference if you connect using IP address or ftp.domain.com or only domain.com. Server will connect you to your home directory in any case.

Yes you're right it works with or without the preceeding ftp. Yesterday it wasn't working as described so today I tried it without the ftp and it worked, so I assumed that was the fix

Don't know what the solution was then - DOS ftp is really simple to use and I've been doing so for years & years, so I doubt that I made an error. But what else??

Ah well it's fixed now and I've uploaded what I need for now

It's happening again. I can log in OK but cannot get a directory listing or transfer any files. The cpanel file manager is OK but not ftp.

What info should I give to who to find where this problem is?

Thanks.

you could try using a different ftp client - like filezilla - I have problems with some clients not retrieving directory listings for some reason - but filezilla never has a problem.

Thanks I've tried in Filezilla too. Same thng - signs in OK but cannot get a listing:
Status: Connected
Status: Retrieving directory listing...
Command: PWD
Response: 257 "/" is your current location
Command: PORT (nnnn)
Response: 200 PORT command successful
Command: TYPE A
Response: 200 TYPE is now ASCII
Command: LIST
Error: Timeout detected!
Error: Could not retrieve directory listing

Is there no solution to this?

Thumbs up

Sorted Thanks again to all and the quick fingered support people.

The solution: there is a setting within FileZilla for 'passive transfer mode'. With this set to "Use passive mode" everything works - previously it was set to "Use Default". So I assume that the default was active, but changed one day and flipped back the next?

Yes, there are several of the default settings in CuteFTP that I had to change to get it to work. However CuteFTP automatically suggested the settings changes so I didn't need to contact support .

So looks like if you use CuteFTP you won't encouter the same problems thankfully.

There's still more to this than has been explained.

I have been using Dreamweaver (and previously LeechFTP) with my Eukhost accounts now for well over a year with no issues.

A few weeks ago (after all the ftp issues arose) I started getting the same symptoms as Frazer - i.e. conection was OK but LIST failed. After a while of messing around and creating new ftp accounts and then getting the password wrong I managed to get my IP address blocked. Once it was released everthing seemed to be back to normal.

This weekend the same symtoms came back - and I have virtually repeated all the above steps - including somehow getting the IP blocked (not sure how this time). One of the pieces of advice that has come across from support is that the ftp client must be set up for passive mode. OK - it took just a few moments for me to track this setting down in dreamweaver - but I can confirm that I have definitely never had it set that way before - similarly with LeechFTP.

I hate mysteries - because you don't learn anything from them - so can anyone shed some light - I am assuming there must have been some recent changes on the servers?

regards
Chris.

IP could have been blocked after multiple failed log in attempts. It is an anti hacker method used by eUKhost to stop accounts being compromised.

Maybe some of the default settings in your old FTP client are different to your new FTP client. Have you tried reverting back to using your old FTP client and see if that works?

The FTP problems that were around a few weeks ago on eUKhost have since been completely sorted (as far as I am aware) so they should not be having any impact on a current situation.

Hope that helps .

Question

No I think you're missing the point. I'm not using a new ftp client. I've been using Dreamweaver for years now.

The question boils down to - why is it now necessary to turn on 'use passive ftp' when it wasn't required before. Also - this requirement is still not 'fixed'. e.g. last night when my IP access was restored I could get all accounts working fully again, even those where 'passive ftp' is NOT set.
