Default Network timeout on sites - affects Virgin (ISP) users

I think this problem is specific to users of Virgin internet however since late Friday evening I've been unable to access any of my sites which are hosted with eukhost.

This problem doesn't seem to be server specific as sites hosted on typhoon, puma, and merlin are producing this error. Whilst I can access this site & forum, I'm also unable to access some sites listed in the web review forum as I get the timeout error.

I'm wondering whether eukhost may have done something with the firewall which has accidentally blocked (some) Virgin users? From glancing at the other topics there has been something security related spotted as some account passwords were reset. I've tried resetting my router a couple times along with flushing the DNS on my computer, which usually sorts out problems.

Checking on Down for everyone or just me? I'm aware the sites themselves are physically up. It's a pain as Sunday's I generally do updates to the football website to upload content such as results & reports. Anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

Have you tried restarting your modem/unplugging it then plugging it back in?

Also, I suggest changing your DNS servers to the OpenDNS ones, that normally erradicates any problems for Virgin users, they are:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

I've reset the modem a few times including just now, without luck. I've also changed the router to us the OpenDNS info but alas no luck (visiting the site confirms I'm browsing using their DNS).

I would say go onto Virgin livechat and pester them - eventually things get elevated to their second line support. Granted they are slow as anything getting back to you but I've noticed things being slow today with Virgin to the eUK servers.

Are you on ADSL or cable?

Well I've just got into work where we use Demon... ...and the sites don't load. (For reference at work we have a static IP.) I can see this very quickly becoming a nuisance, and a headache for me once others arrive and the day progresses.

EDIT: Phoning down to our other branch in High Wycombe they've not got any problems. Looks like it's a localised/regional problem in Cambridgeshire.

The amount of times I've heared this problem over the past year is uncountable :P

This is really becoming a big problem - but no one knows the cause of the problem. TCP and Standard tracerouts work fine when the service is unavailable to Virgin Users which makes the problem even more confusing.

Virgin (prev NTL) here and all OK

Interestingly I've just come off live chat about a customer who can't connect to any of my sites - but he's with Telefonica.

I don't think this is specific to one ISP, as I'm having the same problem with both Virgin & Demon. I can only assume the routing is going wrong (is that the right phrase?) or that the firewall(s) has had a bad wildcard ban added to it since Friday.

I've noticed that the affected sites all use [ns].eukdns.com, however this site uses [ns].eukhost.com values, hence probably why I can still access these forums. Would changing the DNS values to the latter temporarily solve the problem? I'm unable to access Web hosting Web hosting at present getting the timeout error. Needless to say as it's workplace which is affected it's becoming a bigger problem as the hours pass.

Hmmm. That's an interesting point actually. I'll try and get someone to look at that.

The problem isn't anything to do with DNS, or the nameservers that the domain uses. I use private nameservers on my server and have the same problem but only on the Virgin network. When the problem occurs, I can't access any eUKhost hosted website, even eukhost.com.

I occasionally get the issue and I'm using OpenDNS so it's not a Virgin DNS problem I don't think.

Good news, in the past couple minutes (possibly in coinciding with changing work's router DNS to OpenDNS) websites & emails have returned.

I think there is something very odd going on with the DNS servers. Is there any chance you can check to see if your Virgin and Demon DNS servers happen to be the same?

Both ISPs are now working *touch wood*. According to support in both instances my IP was being blocked, and once unblocked I was able to access the sites/email/ftp.

I'm slightly duvious as to whether this was the full story, on account that the same thing happenned with two different IPs/ISPs at around the same time. I'm fairly certain once in the past support told me they had sorted puma to ensure our work's fixed IP didn't get blocked in future.
