Default Problems with multiple POP3 checks?

Following the attacks recently, has something been put in place to prevent multiple connections from the same IP address?

I use Mail Washer to check and filter some 6 to 8 POP3 accounts, and when used in the simultaneous mode it can't check any of the accounts, returning error messages on all of them. It has to be used in the sequential mode.

Eudora always gives an error message on at least one account, but it is never the same account on each mail check.

I was going to ask on one of the attack threads, but they are now all closed.#

Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

Hello Steve,

cPanel wont allow you to establish more than 200 POP3 connections per hour. You will need to consider either a VPS Hosting or Semi Dedicated Server if you wish to establish more connections. We also have CSF which blocks IP addresses if more than 10 connections are established within 10 seconds.

Default Changes?

I have 11 POP3 mail accounts on eUKHost. Prior to about 3 weeks ago there was no problem with running Mailwasher in Simultaneous mode to check all those accounts. Now it has to be made to run in sequential mode, or it is not allowed to check any accounts, and when the mail client then checks 7 of those accounts it usually gets an error message on one or another of the accounts.

So, the promise of a large number of POP3 e-mail accounts isn't quite so good in the light of the limits on picking up POP3 mail.

I have had to reduce the interval with which Mailwasher checks accounts. I will have to remove some accounts from the default mail check on Eudora.

Oh well. Something to add to the check list when buying hosting.......

multiple pop3 connections increases size of process list and server performance will degrade if server tries to process more than 200 pop3 connections per second. it should not make much difference if you download new emails every other minute.

I have set 3 minutes auto-check in my outlook so it really makes no difference if you receive new emails 3 minutes late.

Default Re setting checking times

Hi there!

I have reset my Mailwasher to check every 5 minutes not every 3 with sequential checking, as per your advice in your last post.Today it all seems to be working without any issue.

The e-mail client never checks mail automatically, only when Mailwasher informs me there is mail and it has cleaned all the In boxes first.

I'm a little confused in your 2 previous posts,

Quote:

and
Quote:

I have set up Mailwasher to avoid going over the first limit, and today all seems well. I'm assuming the second limit is a typo, but if not can you clarify?

Thanks!

I would think it would be safe to assume that it is 200 pop3 connections per hour .
