We will be changing hostname of Agusta to test what IJ has suggested in above post. Please allow couple of hours to get this done. I will let you know when you should proceed with other round of test emails.

Hello Mark,
I wish to clarify a bit. By changing hostname I did not mean changing "Augusta". Just that it was observed the hosted domain must have an A record on the mailserver, which creates a virtualhost on the mailserver.

Again, it was only an observation. not sure if it is *the* cause untill all tests show positive results.

I have registered eukservers.com and it is pointing to Agusta. I will change existing hostname and new hostname will be agusta.eukservers.com. This should be done within few hours as the new domain will need some time to propagate.

Hello,
As I said earlier, this is a bit confusing for me too since we did a lot of tests.

Here is a better explanation.

If noel's Domain is Noel.com; Webserver is 127.0.0.10 and Mailserver is 127.0.0.15:

NOEL.COM. IN A 127.0.0.10
NOEL.COM. IN MX 10 MAIL.NOEL.COM
MAIL.NOEL.COM. IN A 127.0.0.15 --> Note that here we have an A record

now Augusta's nameserver must have an A record or virtual hosting for augusta.eukservers.com as well as MAIL.NOEL.COM

Here is a variation:
======================
NOEL.COM. IN A 127.0.0.10
NOEL.COM. IN MX 10 MAIL.NOEL.COM
MAIL.NOEL.COM. IN CNAME AUGUSTA.EUKSERVERS.COM
--> Note that here we have a CNAME record

======================

Without the above, in some cases ( i guess when there was only CNAME pointing to mailserver without domain's hosting account on it), the local mailserver reported 550, Action not taken, mailbox not local and it did not send the mail. While in other cases, when there was an A record but the hostname did not match with MX record/PTR, the mail was sent and accepted by remote server, but never delivered. I did receive some failures after 24-30 hours but it was not possible to identify which messages and under what configuration they had failed.

In Linux/WHM/Cpanel, there is usualy only one Box, which also servers as a nameserver to the hosted domains, so this need does not arise there.

Hope this solves everyone's problem and finds and opening to another tunnel on Yahoo and others.

Regds
IJ

PS: Are Nigel's and RSVEccosse's mails working flawlessly now? In that case we have found the solution??

I have to admit that this is all double dutch to me.

Should it be working now? (I'll try anyway) or should I wait a few hours.

Will I need to change any settings at my end?

might this fix the webmail problems as well?

I'm confused, but thankful for all the effort people are putting in on this.

Hello Noel,
This talk is for adults only. Minors are not allowed and they won't understand

Well jokes apart, you need not do anything other than posting here when things seem to change at your end. Allow a few hours before testing, about 24 to propagate the DNS records changes they may have done, although changes should reflect immediatetely if they're not changing the nameservers.

Regards
IJ

hostname of Agusta has been changed now. new hostname is Agusta.eukservers.com and all Records have been modified to reflect hostname changes.

OK - I've done a whole bunch of tests and things are definitely looking up.

Sent an email at 23:12 yesterday and it went straight through (this was before your post above)
did some more tests but I was too tired to really remember what I did.

Did some more methodical tests this morning. at first it looked like it still was not working:

Mail sent from my local email client at 09:26 and 09:35
Mail sent from webmail at 09:44
Mail sent from ruby app on agusta at 10:03

Nothing arived by 10:10

Checked again at 10:17... with one exception all messages now arived, including one sent at 23:23 last night.

The only message I'm still waiting for is the one sent by the ruby application on augusta. Could this be because the app is running in the subdomain ruby.noelwalters.co.uk but the return address is set to signup(at)sharehost.co.uk? Anyway I'll check again to see if it arrives later.

I did tests with my email client set to connect to agusta.eukhost.com as well as agusta.eukservers.com. mail from both has now been delivered. Which is prefered?

When I set it to connect to agusta.eukservers.com I get a certificate error (mismatched domains) so I'll continue to connect to agusta.eukhost.com unless you tell me otherwise.

I will continue to monitor the situation.

Thanks again for all your help.

Finally! managed to get a signup email from my ruby app to yahoo!

Solution was to change the the email delivery method in the application configuration file to use sendmail instead of SMTP.

eg. "config.action_mailer.delivery_method = :sendmail"

Just goes to show what can be acheived by random stabs in the dark.

differencs is you now see this in the mail header:

"received: from noelsco by agusta.eukservers.com with local (Exim 4.68 )"

instead of:

"received: from [127.0.0.1] (port=57680 helo=localhost.localdomain) by agusta.eukservers.com with local (Exim 4.68 )"

mail went through instantly!

Yes!

Party Time!

Hello Noel,
I'd advise not to jump to conclusions. Keep your fingers crossed Let at least 48 hours pass on, since we've seen ups and downs during off-peak and peak hours. However I am confident that it should not matter with Yahoo but maybe with "corporate services" of Yahoo or local ISP networks.

All the best!

Yeah, I'm not getting too exited just yet, but it's the first time it's ever worked from my ruby application so it is definitely a result of sorts.

Further testing reveals that I am still seeing random delays but that is much better than no delivery at all.

I've also, occasionally, seen random delays when sending from o2 as well, so it's not just eukhost that are effected by this problem.

Even so, When I have my pint of beer tonight I'll feel I've earned it.

Good to see that things are going in the right direction. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that I hope this is the last we hear of this problem and that we are all keeping our fingers crossed .

Hi folks,

Not posted in this thread for a bit since I've been rather side tracked with work.

However, I can report that I've been continuously doing test send and receives from various domains of mine on Viking to Yahoo and thus far, all are getting through within seconds.

Glad to see everyone else getting somewhere on this issue eventually.

So once again, a big to EUK.

Thanks for all the effort and assistance put into this annoying and somewhat difficult to fix problem.

I will of course, be the first to reply back here at the hint of any further delayed email problems.

You should ideally use mail.yourdomain.com where yourdomain.com is the domain you have hosted. This is because in case your webhost makes any changes, you won't need to change anything from your side.

It seems you're using Secure Protocol (in advanced tab of Outlook Express), disabling that will remove the certificate error.

Occasional mail delay is normal, since there maybe heavy mail traffic in the queue, as in Christmas and New Year time, or sometimes a bad mail gets stuck. as long as it is occasional or intermittent (say once in a month), it is acceptable and mostly goes unnoticed.

Thanks for the warm words. and You're welcome!
But thanks to you guys for listening! I hope things are sorted now.

But still wondering, what was the actual solutions to Nigel and RSVEcosse's issue? And why only Noel has reported the problem from Augusta?

I'll have my pint of bear too anyway...
