Default Viking Server down

Viking has been down for most of the afternoon and although I have an email saying it's under maintenance could we not get an update in a post somewhere letting everyone (well those affected) know the status of the server?

I don't really like keep hassling support because it stops them working on problems just to keep answering my questions, so a post on the forum with a regular update would save a lot of people hassling them.

Just a suggestion.

Tim

p.s. Any news?

I am not very happy with this.

I joined EUK Hosting in March and have had more interuptions than, I had with my last hosting company in 5 years.

I would have thought it would have been courteous for an announcement to be placed on this forum. (Unable to receive emails.)

I would too like, an update of when this is going to be resolved?

Thank you.

Me too, I've had more down time in the last few months on Eukhost than in 13 years on my last host (who I'm still with for another one of my website hostings and they still haven't had any down time this year).

All the explanations seem reasonable, are all separate issues, and things are usually sorted out quite quickly but I'm beginning to wonder if this is going to be a regular occurance.

As we can't receive email at this time a full explanation and some updates would be appreciated.

I too found my website hosting down today and originally suspected it to be due to the DNS issue of yesterday.
I was told about 3 hours ago that the server would be back up in about 20 minutes.
After raising a ticket I see that the estimate was woefully inaccurate.
I have had no email notification.

I have previously only had good things to say about support but I think things have deteriorated.
I suppose if you set a very high standard then anything less (more than others) will be a disappointment.
When I use online chat, the responses are slow and I have to say, inaccurate.

I do hope that this is a 'glitch' as I have found eUKhost's service far exceeds other suppliers.

I can understand your frustrations and I am sure when one of the support team see this they will update the thread accordingly.

Hopefully the reason for no response to this thread is that they are quickly trying to solve the problem and are nearing completition .

Thanks for you support. I think the point is being missed though.
A notification here would have saved a number of support calls, tickets and online chats.
Regular postings would also limit the repeated enquiries.

How many servers are down? Out of how many?
Are support that stretched, I hope that more servers don't fall over.

I apologise if I seem negative, I work in a support environment and understand some of the issues. There are just easier and better ways...

More likely as it's a weekend there aren't sufficient support staff to do much more than email out a standard reply about no ETA etc.

The timing is perfect as always (damn sods law) on a Saturday when most people have time to use the website hostings. It's not been a good week for service so far.

I was told this was a problem with the /tmp changing to read only. This is not a 5 hour job to sort out.

Even if they had restored backups it wouldn't have taken this long.

Fair enough if the server is down due to an unexpected problem.

If it's regular maintenance, then there should be some prior notification.

But then, as Eukhost so often imply in response to any customer feedback or criticism, we should be lucky to get anything for the price we pay.

Like alot of people here I'm not fussed about the cost, I choose Eukhost because they offered the full services I wanted.

I would pay 2 or 3 times as much (or even more) for a consistent service.

I have been having periodic downtime 2-3 days this week, where it is down for perhaps at most 10 15, relaise this may be due to traffic hitting my website hosting. But this is beyond a joke

An update : Viking is undergoing an FSCK at the moment.
I can understand your situation as well as frustation, no one would ever like (including me) the idea of their website hosting being down. The /tmp partition's inodes were full & had to be cleared out, this is what is taking most of the time. I'll keep you updated regarding the server's status.

Hello,

As there were problems with the /tmp partition. The partition got read-only. So the server has been rebooted and is currently under maintainance. Our DC engineers team are working on it. We won't be able to provide you an exact ETA, but we are in touch with the DC peoples and update you as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience caused

session file count in /tmp partition crossed 32,000 figure today within very short spam of time and inode crashed due to this reason. Our system admins formatted /tmp partition and server was rebooted after that but the server went into FSCK mode after that.

FSCK does not seem to complete right now as the difference between both drives in RAID is of 32,000 files and RAID seems to take long time to rebuild.

We are working on some alternate solution to bring the server online ASAP.

I'll keep you updated with the status and ETA to have the server online.

This is just great - just, what we all need!

Especially, if you are running a business and depend on your website hosting being available.

We have successfully sorted problem with /tmp partition on Viking. one customers website hosting was under severe Bot attack and thousands of sessions were written in /tmp partition of the server within a minute.

We have terminated account of this customer who was responsible for this problem and backup of his account has been sent to him.

I sincerely apologize for this problem as this has happened for the first time on any of our servers. Previously I have seen such problem on a server where so many sessions were written in /tmp partition and inode crashed on that server once 32,000 sessions were created in the partition.

We have now added scripts on all server to keep a count of sessions in /tmp partition and the script will take care of deleting sessions if the count goes beyond 2000.
