This is something that's infuriated me for years now. I have registered a domain name and fine - after I change the nameservers I wait a few hours to check its propagation progress. I check and it still shows the ukreg's standard holding page - this is fine as propagation can take a long while. After 20 hours and still not pointing to my hosting I begin to test the website hosting in a proxy to see if it indeed has indeed managed to break away from the ukreg's holding page... indeed it has and there is my shiny new web page on my dedicated server. Hmmm, I check my browser withoutht the proxy and still not my lovely page. I clear cache - still no luck. I fire up my Mac, jump into safari and lo and behold there it is - just as I want it. I return to my PC, check the website hosting in firefox, opera, IE, safari and navigator... all I get is ukreg again!! I restart my router - no change there. Checking Linux resolves to UKreg also.
So, my question is...

Why can I see my website hosting resolved to my Dedicated Server on a Mac (OS 10.4) when I simply cannot get it to show on my PC or Linux? They all run through the same router. I have had this problem on numerous occasions over the years and it does my head in.

Can anyone cast any light on this?

Flush your DNS cache.

To do so:

Close all browsers

Open the command prompt by the following:

Start > run > CMD

type: ipconfig /flushdns

hit enter

reopen ure browser to check if it works.

thanks for the reply - I forgot to mention that I had already done that. But the fact that linux (suse 10.1) still resolves to UKReg suggests its not a DNS cache problem. Its an infurating problem. I'm gonna restart my PC - not that it should make a difference but I'm gonna do it anyway - see if it does anything. lol.

Your MAC is using different Resolver IPs and that DNS server had no cache of your website hosting. Your Linux system and your PC seem to have same resolver / DNS configuration and there is an old cache of domain - IP association in that DNS server.

so change the DNS resolvers and results would change

Ooooooh, that's a good answer - and seems logical. I have no idea how I would change the dns resolver on XP however. I'll look into it.
I assume that a DNS resolver is web based? - and thus could be located in a different country to the machine requesting info? This would explain why a website hosting doesn't resolve if it hasn't yet propagated to the locality of the DNS resolver. Or am I waffling boll**ks lol.

Hello,

You can change your local machines DNS resolver with following steps

Goto start >> select control panel >> Network connection >> local area connectin >> select properties >> from general tab >> select Internet protocol >> proerties

Here you change your prefered DNS and alternet DNS.

aaah - so the dns resolver is the same as dns server? In that case the mac uses the same address as the windows and linux machines - they all run through the same router and that is the dns server address for each.

one thing should definitely work for Windows to clean temporary files and that is "System Mechanics". You can download Trial version from iolo.com and clean all temporary files to sort this problem.

There's nothing else besides local cache and DNS cache to create this problem.

thanks for the pointer - I'll use it next time this happens as its now all resolved as it should, given that its been a few days.
What perplexes me is that it doesn't just happen on one machine - windows machines without such address in the cache, the linux machine without the address previously in cache and a fully 'flushed' machine all displayed the ukreg holding page long after it had apparently propagated. Its strange.

Which OS? which router? which ISP?

Try using a public DNS on the Router, and on the PC too (if using Bridged Mode). The router maybe having an ISP DNS which is not updating or there could be a DNS cache somewhere.

Try these:

Open DNS:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Alternate Root Server Confederation:
199.166.28.10 (PS0.NS2.VRX.NET) - Atlanta, Ga
199.166.29.3 (nl.public.rootfix.net) - Nederlands
199.166.31.3 (NS1.QUASAR.NET) - Orlando, FL, USA
204.57.55.100 (NS1.JERKY.NET) - Boston, MA, USA

If it was the router - would that not affect all computers on the network? My headache is that the mac resolves much sooner than the other machines -but all are on the same router. Anyway - I'll have to wait till I have the problem again with a new domain once the domains have resolved, I have no problem viewing updates immediately on any machine. I'll save this post till then and see if it makes a difference.
