WordPress is, generally speaking, working for me but there seem to be a few aspects which aren't.

Basically, I can't add categories through the WP administrative interface; the only way I've been able to add categories is going through cpanel and phpmyadmin. Also, if I put a hyperlink in the text of a post, the post does not save or publish to the blog - once 'publish' is pressed I am redirected to my webspace's main index.

Has this happened to anyone else?

thats due to mod_security rules on our server. please disable mod_security for your account by adding following code in your .htaccess

<IfModule mod_security.c>

    SecFilterEngine Off

    SecFilterScanPOST Off

Would that be in my main public_html folder or the one relating to my WordPress account. If it's the latter then I had to make my own .htaccess file.

In the end I added that piece of code to both but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I am not sure how you were trying to make a .htaccess file but there was nothing in your original .htaccess file.

I've added this code from my end and everything is sorted for your account.

Yes, don't forget that .htaccess files are invisible in file manager so you may have had problems finding it due to that .
