Forwarding domain to subdirectory.
Hi again. I'm trying to find out how to forward my domains (hosted elsewhere) to a subdirectory on my shared hosting package here. I can forward domains to the right nameservers and have them open the website files for the root but subdirectories get me. I'm trying to host more than one website on the package so I really need to be able to do this.
I've been through your FAQ for this subject but can't find the answer:
Domain Names | Web Hosting UK | Dedicated Servers | VPS Hosting
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
You can simply put the URL with subdirectory of your domain hosted on shared hosting package in redirect settings of domain (hosted elsewhere).
For example :
You have domain Home - ABC.com hosted on shared hosting and you have http://xyz.com hosted elsewhere and you want to redirect http://xyz.com to http://abc.com/< subdirectory> , then you just need to put http://abc.com/< subdirectory> URL in redirect setting of http://xyz.com
You can do this using control panel of http://xyz.com or you can ask to do hosting provider of http://xyz.com .

That's fine but obviously I don't want all my websites to be called xyz.com/subdomain1, xyz.com/subdomain2. My websites are called Top Freelance Web Design, Newcastle Upon-Tyne, Daniel Cottrell. and www.advancedviewing.com. I'd like to be able to forward these domains, hosted elsewhere to the subdirectories on my ftp account. I'd rather not do frame redirects either as this just masks all of the URL and I hate frames anyway.
So basically to to simplify this, I need to be able to modify the root directory of my domains.
Top Freelance Web Design, Newcastle Upon-Tyne, Daniel Cottrell. goes to http_docs/mmf/
www.advancedviewing.com goes to http_docs/aviewing/
This just seems like basic functionality to me. I did ask about this before signing up and was told that it was possible.
(PS. I couldn't display my links on this page properly.)

Hi,
You should add your other domains as addon domains from your cpanel control panel and choose respective sub-directory for those while adding them as addon domains. This will automatically point those domains to respective sub-directory and they will show content of respective sub-directory once they start resolving from our servers.
If you find this difficult to sort from your side, then ask our support team to get this sorted for you. I'm quite sure you will manage to figure it out yourself when you do this for one of your domains. Make sure you don't choose to empty your sub-directories while adding the addon domains.

Does this mean that I have to register the domain at Eukhost? I clicked on add domain in Plesk but I wasn't sure if this meant I was trying to register the domain with Eukhost as the registrar.
I don't mind doing this if I absolutely have to as long as I don't have to pay for the domain until it expires (have only just registered new domains on another registrar). Please tell me if it can be achieved any other way.
Thanks for the help so far.

I've just accidently removed my domain www.danielcottrell.co.uk from Plesk. The domain said "expired" next to it, and because the domain's registered elsewhere I thought it would be ok. I've added it again, plus the ftp account but in the file manager none of my files are listed. Please tell me this process hasn't just killed my website. The domain now just goes to a holding page and the ftp won't connect (assuming that this will take some time to reestablish.) I really really hate Plesk, I just can never do anything with it.

Hi there NinjaBear,
I would suggest that you contact the Windows hosting support team at 'windows [at] eukhost.com'. What may have happened is that Plesk hasn't removed all instances of your domain from the server when you deleted it, meaning that setting it up again may have mucked things. If you contact the support team then they should be able to sort your issue out ASAP.
In terms of Plesk not functioning properly, you can always consider Linux web hosting which will provide you with access to the cPanel control panel if you want to use something less complicated. However, Linux web hosting doesn't contain a majority of the features that Windows web hosting has.
Do post back here if you need anymore assistance.

Deleting the domain will remove all the settings from the server including the database as well as email addresses. I have restored the web data from backups and the site looks OK now. Please let us know if you need any further help.

THANK YOU! Yes the website is back to normal, won't be doing that again in a hurry. For some reason the ftp account is still not working. I've tried changing the password but to no avail.
Coming back to the original post (#5). Do I have to register my domain at Eukhost in order to forward the domain to the subdirectory?

Hi,
You don't need to register your domain name with us in order to forward the domain to the sub-directory. All you need to do is point nameservers of your domain name to the nameservers which were sent to you in welcome email and that's it!
I've asked one of our windows team to fix your FTP problem. They will get back to you asap.

I think I'm beginning to understand Plesk, slowly.. I'm not actually adding domains to the control pannel, as if I were buying a domain and adding it to a package, I'm just adding "domain settings" if you follow me. So I could add Google to Plesk if I wanted, not that I'd be able to modify the nameserver settings in order to make it point to my site.
I've tried adding the domain that I need but I can find no place in the entire control pannel which makes any reference to the subdirectory I wish to forward it to. I've tried the typical functions such as: "domain administrator", "dns settings", "setup", "subdomains", "web directories", "file manager"....etc. Sorry I'm not better at this, I even tried looking through the Plesk documentattion, which didn't help.
Thanks about the ftp account, will keep checking.
Edited
I tried going into Setup for the domain, but when using Physical forwarding it doesn't give you any dir options, it just asks you about MS Frontpage etc, yuk!

Hi,
The FTP issue should be fixed now. I've reset the password for the FTP account to that of your Plesk control panel, the FTP username remains unchanged..
Regarding the domain forwarding, this can't be done from Plesk control panel as there are certain limitations within the control panel itself... cPanel proudly supports that feature. The website on sub-directory feature is available in Plesk for when adding sub-domains, but not for domains.
What I can suggest here is that, you add both the domains selecting 'Physical Hosting' & we'd do the necessary redirection configurations from the IIS web server directly. Thus, by adding the domains from the control panel all the necessary DNS & other settings would be configured correctly by default. You'd just need to point the NS of those domains to that of our server's. The domain would then be pointing to our server but running from a sub-directory as per your requirement.
Do let us know if you have any further questions..

Thanks Rock. This information has been a little conflicting, but as long as I know there is no easy way of achieving multihosting / multihoming on Plesk then that's simple. I'll contact you when I need to forward the domains, it won't be for a little while yet, wanted to just get things under way.
Many thanks again for everyone's help on this thread.

If you ever get the chance, ditch Windows for Linux (hosting wise). WHM /cPanel is a god send .

Yeah, everything is so much easier in cPanel etc. Roll on the Windows version to help the poor people who have to live with Plesk.

Yes, although the fact its on Windows will even degrade cPanels performance . However it will no doubt be a step up from Plesk.

Not with the new version of Windows Server coming out. They're designed to work together!
