Default Port security

What are eUKhost's policies re blocking ports?

I have two accounts on different shared servers.

A check on common ports on one give
Quote:
PORT STATE SERVICE VERSION
21/tcp open ftp PureFTPd
26/tcp open smtp Exim smtpd 4.69
53/tcp open domain ISC BIND Named
80/tcp open http Apache httpd
110/tcp open pop3 Courier pop3d
143/tcp open imap Courier Imapd (released 200
443/tcp open ssl/http Apache httpd
465/tcp open ssl/smtp Exim smtpd 4.69
993/tcp open ssl/imap Courier Imapd (released 200
995/tcp open ssl/pop3 Courier pop3d
3306/tcp open mysql MySQL 5.0.81-community
3333/tcp open dec-notes ?
The same check on the other has rather more ports
Quote:
PORT STATE SERVICE VERSION
1/tcp open tcpwrapped
21/tcp open ftp PureFTPd
26/tcp open smtp Exim smtpd 4.69
53/tcp open domain ISC BIND Named
80/tcp open http Apache httpd
110/tcp open pop3-proxy AVG pop3 proxy 9.0.663/9.0.698
111/tcp open tcpwrapped
143/tcp open imap Courier Imapd (released 200
443/tcp open ssl/http Apache httpd
465/tcp open ssl/smtp Exim smtpd 4.69
993/tcp open ssl/imap Courier Imapd (released 200
995/tcp open ssl/pop3 Courier pop3d
3306/tcp open mysql MySQL 5.0.81-community
3333/tcp open dec-notes?
8009/tcp open ajp13?
8080/tcp open http Apache Tomcat/Coyote JSP engine 1.1
8443/tcp open ssl/https-alt ?
If one server has a more limited set, why haven't they both?

I guess there are applications which need to remotely access a MySQL server but does port 3306 need to be open by default? (I'm glad I use cPanel's password generator to create a 12 chara random password!)

What are ports 111, 333 and 8009? Do they need to be open?

Nick
