Drive Replacement on Server1.eukdns.com ( 147.202.42.190 )
Server1.eukdns.com ( 147.202.42.190 ) is facing problems with its primary drive which we have decided to replace today. Backup of existing data and restore on the new drive will take close to 12 hours so all customers on this server are requested to shutdown their forums or dynamic sections of website hosting as the data stored in this period of 12 hours may get saved on old drive which will be lost after restore of backup on new drive.
Regards,
Mark.

Any idea what time you'll be finishing? Yo've put 12 hours on, and yes, i know that the post was made at 10:56, but does that mean that you started at 11am or before or after? You mention that you want us to close down our dynamic content so I'm guessing after but the website hosting is down now

12 hours is a bit much do you not think? I would like to know when my 600 odd members can regain access to my website hosting!

An Email to customers would have been nice before the start - I could have at least warned everyone.
I've got 150 direct members + a second website hosting wondering what's going on.
I appreciate that this is the best time to do maintence... but I would have thought you would have a RAID setup on the hard drives - so an auto backup would have been taken automatically. That way, a simple swap would all that would have been needed.
Anyhow... what's done is done. Any updates on time/progress etc?

An email would have been very nice...
A drive replacement shouldn't require a whole new OS install and reinstating of everyones data, surely a server such as this should at least have some form of RAID.

As has been said, a warning would be nice, an update would be even nicer! After all it is now coming up 6 hours since the first notice was posted.

We are restoring data right now. We had sent email to all customers on this server but those who have email accounts on 147.202.42.190 must have missed the email as we had to shutdown al services on the server to continue backup.
Backup was failing on the server coz of the load from other services and the primary drive went into read only mode when we were taking fresh backup.
We are now restoring the data from the old primary which should complete in next 3 hours. Our management decided to change the primary as the server would have been unable to work for next 6 days coz of the bad sectors it had.
RAID drives have many problems as some of our servers with RAID had frequent problems with RAID array. Please allow us next 3 hours to complete the restore smoothly as we dont want any of our customer to loose data.

As the post was made at 5:33pm with a 3 hour deadline, I'd be interested to see what happens in the next 20 minutes.
Fortunately my website hosting hasn't been marketed yet but I do rely on email and today has been a tragedy for the ethos of "Customer Service".
I'm very unhappy indeed, 12+ Hours downtime is nothing short of hosting your website hosting locally on a ZX81 with a wobbly rampack whilst attached to a rollercoaster.

I've noticed spot outages over the last couple of weeks... if this was the cause - and a 12hour maintenance session fixes it, then i'm happy.
annoying - yes.
bad customer service - not really if they fix the problem.
better to have a working system than a broken system , surely?
