Default Merlin is Down

Dear Customers,

The Linux Shared Server Merlin with the IP 217.112.82.13 is down at the moment. It has gone into Read Only mode. Our senior system administrators & NOC engineers are working in tandem to correct this.

We regret the inconvenience caused during this while. Thank you all for your co-operation.

Crazy! When I phoned eUK they told me it was planned maintenance! What at 9:30 in the morning???? At least be honest! I started to get database errors at 11pm lastnight.

In future send emails to all affected when servers are down and well in advance of maintenance to inform us of the problem, reason and timescale. Some of us actually run businesses!

We do not have an ETA at the moment, however we will post updates in this thread as soon as we have an update.

There was a problem last night. But the server was back online. These are newer issues which creeped in. I apologize on behalf of phone support. We are in touch with the NOC team. I will keep the forum updated.

A perfect ETA is not possible at this time. Definitely not days & too many hours.

I'm guessing it's in the 'hours' category based on the previous reply.

Chances are last night's fix to get the server back online was essentially 'gaffer tape' until someone could physically get to the server and make full repairs (new hard drive?) in the morning. Thus it was as such 'planned maintenance', though only planned a few hours prior to it happenning.

Last night's issues were fixed properly. These are new issues which came up a little while back. The server is now accessible ( not on www). We expect this to be fixed sooner than later.

I noticed the problem last night around 10pm.... it was then gradually coming back up with loads of database errors, but still had no email. at around 11.30pm the databases were up and running but no email still. but overnight the emails did return, but have had nothing this morning.

This time can you replace the faulty hard disk instead of just introducing a temporary fix? Having the server go on and offline and struggle like it has done since the weekend isn't acceptable.

Will also like to receive a full explanation of the problems this week and what is being done to prevent this happening again. Just from a reassurance point of view.

Thats exactly what we are going to do. Will have a full scale explanation once the server is fully functional. Our energies are concentrated on getting Merlin back up at the moment.

Question

Hi,

As a new customer of eukhost since 19th December, downtime two days running is not a good start (there may have been other downtime before last night, but I am not aware)

So it didn't come back till at least 10pm then.

Why do I seem to get put on the troublesome servers?
I left my old host because of the excat same problem, forver problems with the server.
But at least eukhost does have support.

Mike

Mike,

I completely understand your thoughts at the moment. Merlin is one of our first servers. It has done well. Last night's problem was solved at about 10.15 Pm fully. The mails also were back a little later.

Today, a little earlier, it went into R/O mode. We would be changing the HDD & if necessary also the chassis to have a new setup. This might delay the server being fully functional a little bit. On the other side, it will also ensure there are no future issues.

Changing hard-drives now. The server is expected back up online in about 45 minutes more.

I thought this was what the tech-person mailing list was about? I know I subscribed to it but as yet have had no emails though it...... Perhaps it would be a good time to think about using it for circumstances like this? I know people check their emails way more than they check these forums.

That is a good one. I will try & incorporate this. It was my idea to come up with a tech-maliing list. But have been unable to look into it due to paucity of time. I will try my best to use it judiciously from now on.

Problems like this shouldn't be sent through the tech mailing list since it would be sent to everybody on the list and many might not even be on Merlin. People should be emailed through the billing system so that all customers on Merlin are notified.
