Default Primary HDD failure on Concorde.eukhost.com

Concorde.eukhost.com has suffered a catastrophic primary Hard drive failure. The partition tables are unreadable, and no data is recoverable from this drive.

Backup drive is intact. We have replaced primary HDD and re-installed the base OS along with cPanel. We have initiated restoration of all accounts and data from the secondary and it should not take more than couple of hours to restore everything as it was on 26th November 2006.

We will analyze drive copy speed and update this thread with ETA for complete restoration.

Sad news indeed, I reported 2 website hosting response failures early this afternoon - it is worrying that it takes this long to let people know!
I take it from your post that anything on affected web website hostings updated after 26th November will not be restored?

Your website hostings are working now but anything that was added after 26th of November is not recoverable as the old primary drive failed completely and the error we are getting when trying to fetch anything from is "Sorry, There is no Linux partition on this drive"

Hi,

Just a quick question. My forum has lost any posts from the 18th Nov onwards. Is there going to be another backup to restore or is this it?

Cheers,
LD

Your password for your mailboxes is not working or your cpanel password is not working ?

My website hosting has only been recovered to November 18th... Is there still a restore going on as I run a fairly busy forum and my users are emailing me in rather bad moods right now!

We have backup of this server on some other servers as well. I will see if there's any latest data in backup of your database. We should forget the old primary drive as there is nothing left in it to be called a drive.

Default I've lost everything - bar web site

I've lost everything, bar web website hosting. E-mail accounts, mailing lists, the lot.

Is there any chance at all that these aspects of my account will be restored? My domain is steveu.org and was definitely on Corcorde. Which appears to have crashed and burned.

I'm curious that a hoster seems to be doing a back up only about once a week.

Does this mean that I need to work out how to back up all my stuff somewhere else?

We always have option to restore data from the previous primary drive when there's a hard drive crash but what has happened with Concorde is very rare. We make monthly remote backups and weekly backups on a secondary drive of same server but last weeks backup which should have been done on 26th didn't complete for some unknown reason.

We cannot make daily backups on such servers as it will keep the server overloaded at least for 3 - 4 hours every night which will result in problems for server.

I have requested our system admins to make daily backups of at least MySQL Server databases as thats the most important thing for any website hosting and contents of home directory don't change daily. I personally feel very sad for whatever happened with drive on concorde as similar thing had happened to our main server before 3 years where we lost data worth 2 months.

We started making multiple backups of all servers since then but now we need to make daily backups of MySQL Server databases to avoid any such problem in future.

Cpanel passwords, email passwords and email service will be back to normal once the /home data is copied and cpanel update is executed. Right now your website hostings are loading from the /home partition on the backup drive and the data is still getting copied on /home of the primary.

Load is high on the server due to restoration so cpanel update cannot be started as of now. Please wait for 1 - 2 hours as we will initiate cpanel update once the restoration is complete.

Thanks very much. I will check back tomorrow to see what's happening.

In the meantime, good night!

You haven't lost everything. You have lost data that was added after 18th of this month.

If you find some time on Saturday / sunday then message me and I will setup daily MySQL Server dump for you which can be downloaded through FTP. We have already initiated daily backup of /var/lib/mysql on all our servers so similar problem should not occur again.

I am not sure what other problems may be possible as this kind of harddrive loss was completely unexpected.

So it's definate then that the server can't be restored after the 18th? If so, I'll use a manual SQL Server dump I have.

Sadly for me, I now have to go through various website hostings and change a lot of information that have been changed in the last 2 weeks.

Can I add that even though your livehelp is useful and the gentleman on tonight was polite and friendly - he didn't actually tell me that there had been a harddrive crash. I have been hasling him of 15 minutes, and if he had said that it was down to a system failure I would have been more understanding.

Default Back up/restore status

Please can someone let us know here when the restore is complete.

It's very disappointing for most of us that the most current back up is 2 weeks old.

I was planning to start a forum but now know I cannot risk it as losing 2 weeks worth of forum traffic would kill it off.

I'm going to look at alternatives for the two mailing lists - it is not ideal to lose two weeks of archive, plus all members who have joined in the last two weeks will no longer exist.

Does eUKhost run any kind of SMART utility on the drives that reports potential problems?

Got to agree on this one! - at one point I was asked to hold for about 35 mins without an update
OK - Problems like this happen, but you should really communicate the problem rather than trying to fob people off.
I used live help on 3 occasions and not once was the HDD crash mentioned.
Out of interest looking at a 'returned mail' yesterday the problem actually started around 1.00pm in the afternoon.
Hdd crash posting - around 6 hours later
