.gov.uk is a second-level domain under the .uk top-level domain, and can be used by all UK government departments (except Defence), local government bodies and associated government funded organisations. The Cabinet Office e-Government Unit (eGU) is responsible for the policy governing the gov.uk domain, and for its rules and guidelines. UKERNA administers the gov.uk domain on behalf of eGU, in providing the name submission, approval and registration systems for the domain.

The usual rules about approval apply with the added exception that the SOA and/or its advisors may reject an application.
