Steps to Back up the Mambo Database

The procedure to backup the Mambo Database is simple, hence one should be able to maintain a regular backup of your websites database. Furthermore, it is essential to take a backup of the database before you install or remove any components.

In order to proceed with the process, you must first login to your cPanel and go to phpMyAdmin.

Though it isn’t a mandatory step, but can avoid few future hassles at the time of restoring the database.

Step 5 – Incase you are taking backup which would be restored on the same server with no change in the settings, then there isn’t anything to bother about. But, if you plan to move it over to a different server all-together with a different MySQL version, then you must choose a relevant Export Compatibility.

Step 6 – Ensure if the box besides the Data is checked, failing to do that would not successfully take backup of the actual data within the database.

Step 7 – Check the box against Save as file. Failing to do this would backup the database as plain text in a textbox.

Step 8 – Choose the type of compression you intend to have. If you have a website with not much data, you can skip this step. Though, choosing to compress it would cause no harm. But, if you have large amount of data, you must select the option of “gzipped” as it offers better compression of files.

Step 9 – Hit the Go button located at the bottom right of the screen.

Step 10 – Having done that, you would be presented with a dialogue box. You must choose the location on your local machine where you wish to save the file.

Steps to Restore the Mambo CMS Database

Step 1 – Login to your cPanel, go to phpMyAdmin

Step 2 – Go to the Structure tab.

Step 8 – Hit Browse now.

Step 9 – You would be shown a dialogue box where would have to select the destination of the backup file on your local machine.

Step 10 – You can choose the gzipped option if you are are sure about your backup file was gzipped, else you can choose the Autodetect choice.

Step 11 – Hit Go

Upon execution of the request, you would be presented with a box stating the successful completion of the process.

Replace the “yourdomain.com” with your actual domain name:

Step 1: Select a language for your Joomla. English is a default language so we leave it as it is. Click on “Next” button to proceed to step 2.

Step 2: This is the pre-installation check step, here we can check the system requirements for Joomla successful installation once again; if anything is marked as “No“ the corrective actions should be taken. Make the main configuration file writable, i.e. rename the default file and set the correct permissions which would allow writing to this file. Change the recommended PHP settings in the .htaccess file located in the root of Joomla application. In this case the changes will be applied to all the files within /joomla directory.

Let’s see how to apply these changes through FileZilla FTP client. Select the configuration.php-dist file in the Joomla’s main directory and rename it to configuration.php . Now check the file’s permission and set them to 777 (read/write/exec) for everyone. Setting the permission to 777 will make the file writable during the installation. Now go back to the joomla installation page to see if the changes are applied to it or not. You can adjust the PHP settings for your domain through .htaccess file. This can be done through FTP client just the same way as we have done it with configuration.php file. Paste the following lines to the .htaccess file and make sure it’s renamed to .htaccess :

php_flag display_errors off
php_flag register_globals off

Make sure you use the correct syntax in your .htaccess or php.ini file. If you are not familiar with how PHP is configured on your server, then contact your hosting provider. Once the changes are applied click on the “Check Again” button on the installation page to confirm the changes are applied. When the settings meet Joomla system requirements, you can proceed to step 3 by clicking on the “Next” button.

Step 3: Click on the “Next” button to agree with GNU General Public License and proceed to step 4.

Step 4: You will get the main configuration page where you have to specify MySQL Host Name, Database name, Username and Password. Make sure you have created a MySQL database before continuing this step, if not create it according to the requirements. Enter the details and click on “Next” button.

Step 5: Here in this step, you will have to specify your FTP settings. Fill out the “Basic Settings and Advanced Settings” and click on the “Next” button.

Step 6: Enter the details “Site Name, Email address for super administrator” scroll down and select “Install Default Sample Data” and click on the “Install Sample Data” button. Click on the “Next” button to proceed to the final step 7.

Step 7: That’s it! The Joomla application has been successfully installed on the server! Now remove the installation directory due to Joomla security reasons, at this step you may simply rename it through FTP client or File Manager. When done, click on the “Site” button on your installation page. It will show you the Joomla first page which is located at:

http://yourdomain.com/joomla/index.php

Replace “yourdomain.com” with your actual domain name. Now you know how to go through all the installation steps and get Joomla setup on the remote server.
