Burstable RAM with VPS Hosting

Q. What is burstable RAM in VPS Hosting?

Ans. Burstable RAM can be provided to users of Virtual Private Servers. Each Virtual Private Server has a guaranteed amount of RAM that it’s able to use at all times. At times it is possible that the usage may exceed the allotted amount of guaranteed RAM available, this is when Burstable RAM comes into play. Burstable RAM is provided to the user during times of high usage or traffic. This RAM is not in use by any VPS on a server and can be allocated to any VPS that may need it as long as it is available. So as long as those resources are available, you as a user will be able to go over that limit of guaranteed RAM.

In other words Burstable RAM is the RAM your VPS has the ability to use but it isn’t guaranteed to. Basically it’s for spikes in usage not consistent usage like Guaranteed RAM. For Example your if VPS has 384 MB Guaranteed RAM, and 1024MB Burstable RAM. This means that after you have used up your guaranteed ram, there is still 640MB Burstable RAM available for burst usage. For this reason we always keep some extra memory available on each server at all times as Burstable RAM.

Burstable RAM is never guaranteed to be available and should not be constantly depended upon for Virtual Private Server operation. If your VPS constantly requires greater resources than your package guarantees, we can quickly arrange an upgrade for you to a VPS Hosting plan with greater guaranteed resources.

VPS vs Semi-Dedicated Server

Q. Can anybody give me some advice on what is my best option as the bandwidth and disc space under both VPS Hosting and Semi Dedicated Hosting is plenty. One of my websites is a small html site with no extras and has a small amount of visitors while the other site is much larger with around 6000 hits a week

Ans. We setup only 6 Semi Dedicated Hosting accounts on one server which maximizes each client’s access to server resources, and since you have only a percentage of the server, you will only pay a fraction of the cost over a dedicated server. All Semi Dedicated hosting accounts are hosted on Dual Quad Core Intel Xeon E5420 processor servers which are much more powerful than a Single Core or Dual Core Xeon processor server. The servers come with 12 GB RAM which ensures that each account hosted on the server gets at least 2 GB of Guaranteed RAM.

Semi Dedicated servers are an ideal solution for hosting data such as resource intensive websites or business application software. They provide a secure environment for client data and clients can also enjoy the full power of the processor and hardware. The clients retain complete control and remote access to the server at all times.

Our Semi Dedicated Hosting servers fill the gap between VPS Hosting and Dedicated Server Hosting. So if you need more resources than a Virtual Private Server but aren’t quite ready to upgrade to a dedicated server yet, eUKhost’s Semi Dedicated Server is the answer for you.

Game server : VPS or Dedicated server ?

Q. Which can be used as good game server, is it VPS or a Dedicated Server?

Ans :- We do not recommend using a VPS as a game server since memory and CPU allocations for a VPS are far lesser as compared to a physical dedicated server. You can try out one of VPS Hosting plans for 1 month to see if it supports games.

We provide assistance with game installations at no additional cost for our dedicated server customers. CPU resources are shared in case of VPS Hosting and we do not offer any support for games hosting on a VPS. Our network backbone is of 15gbps and each dedicated server gets minimum 1gbps uplink as well as downlink speed which ensures best performance for online gaming.

Q. What software do you use to provide VPS functionality?

What does Root Access mean ?

Q. What does Root Access to the server mean ?

Ans. Root Access is an administrator level log-on for your dedicated server or your virtual private server. Having root access to a server gives you the ability to take full control of your server. You can then use it for almost anything you wish to including hosting multiple sites, third party software/applications, game servers etc. You can also maintain it as per your preferences.

Please note that not all Hosting packages come with full root access. We provide full root access to clients only on VPS Hosting, Semi Dedicated Servers and Dedicated Servers.

Even if a client opts for a fully managed server, he/she will be given full administrator rights to his server to have total control of the server and the content hosted on it.

Rebooting my VPS

Q. Is it possible for me to reboot the VPS? Does that imply that I have to somehow monitor the VPS and the site it runs, and take corrective action myself?

Ans. Our VPS Hosting plans are powered by Virtuozzo Power Panel, a powerful VPS management tool which is provided as standard with Linux/Windows VPS Hosting plans. Virtuozzo allows you to reboot your VPS from your end if you need to do so after installation of some software or anything else which requires the virtual environment to be rebooted.

Additionally with Virtuozzo you will be able to stop and start services, view the running process and set up alerts to notify you if there is a problem with your VPS. Virtuozzo powered VPSs offer an order of magnitude higher efficiency and manageability than traditional virtualization technologies.

If there are any hardware problems or anything else which results in downtime then our VPS team will send you an email notification and our phone support team will call you if the downtime is expected to exceed a time frame of 10 - 20 minutes.

Our responsibility is to keep the VPS nodes up and running with minimum uptime of 99.95%, but VPS Hosting customers should contact our VPS support team on weekends to get security settings updated on their VPS and enable monitoring services for their VPS.

Private Nameserver setup for vps or dedicated server

Private Nameserver setup for VPS Hosting or Dedicated Server

First you will have to decide what nameservers you want to set on your VPS/dedicated server/Reseller Hosting Account. If you have the domain “mydomain.com” then you can make the nameservers ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com.

2. Open http://IP/whm then go to IP Functions >> show IP address usage & Check free IP over there or choose your primary and secondary IP Address.
You will need to register nameservers first from registrar end. Login to your registrar’s domain control panel and register the name server or ask them to register the private name server for your domain.

-ns1.domain.com - the Default IP Of your server
-ns2.domain.com - Secondary IP or free IP

Exception : In case if you have just one domain and you have set that name server for your other server and you want to use ns3.domain.com and ns4.domain.com name server for this server then you will have to set the dns for it from the dns zone file of domain.com if you have WHM then you can go to the server where this domain is resolving then open WHM >> Edit a DNS zone >> select domain from the list >> Edit at the end just add this line
ns3 In A First_IP
ns4 In A Second_IP

or if you are using shell then you can simply append following lines there in

# vi /var/named/domain.com.db
ns3 IN A First_IP
ns4 IN A Second_IP

save file.

# service named reload

# rndc reload domain.com

3. http://IP/whm >> Basic cPanel/WHM Setup

Scroll down to Primary Nameserver ns1.domain.com & Click on “Assign IP address” and then “Add an A entry for this name server”

Similarly for Secondary Nameserver ns2.domain.com Click on “Assign IP address ” and then “Add an A entry for this name server”

4. Once all done you can check if your nameservers have started resolving or not from
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/lookup.ch?name=ns1.domain.com&type=A
Once you see the assigned IP address there then it means that the name server for your server are set.

Create new account from your WHM and now you will just need to point your site from your registrar end to these nameservers ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com if you want to resolve your site from this server.
