Getting Your Website Listed With the Search Engines
Getting your website listed with the search engines is an important SEO task to get web traffic, link popularity, and possible income from the web traffic generated. Once you have created and hosted your website on the internet, you should try and make it popular, get a lot of visitors to the site, if possible, get targeted traffic, and then get more visitors continuously. A sure way to get visitors to your website is through submitting your website to the popular search engines like the Google and the Yahoo!
But, after a few weeks, you become very frustrated because your website is still not indexed by the search engines. The inability of the search engines to index your website is due to many reasons. Some of these reasons could be:
1. Allocating adequate time for the search engines to index your website
Search engines take some time to index any website especially if it is new. Indexing a website can take anywhere from one to eight weeks or more. The search engine’s crawlers have a lot of work to do, and it usually visits a new website after it does more important tasks first. But, some webmasters are anxious and expect to see their website getting indexed very fast. They expect to see their website in the search engine result pages (SERPs) the next day they submit their website to the search engines! Of course, some search engines do charge more money for indexing a website quickly, but all the other search engines will send their crawlers only after a week or so to the new website to get its information for indexing.
2. Paid Domains
Get the search engines attention by using paid domains – If your are using free web hosting service to host your website, then the search engines will take more time to index your site, because the search engines either do not send their crawlers to the free websites, or they index only a few websites that are hosted on such free web hosts. The exceptions to this are the free blogs that are hosted on Blogger or WordPress. You should purchase a good top level domain (TLD) name, especially the .com or .org and choose a good web hosting service that are well established. These web hosts provide excellent web services and have an uptime of more than 99.5%. Such websites that have a great TLD and web host combination will get visited quickly by the search engine crawlers compared to the websites hosted on free web hosts.
3. Don’t use frames on your web page
Make sure that none of your important web pages use frames. The search engines do not index such pages based on frames.
4. You website is listed and indexed, but it has a very low ranking in search engines
Due to a variety of factors, your website could have received a very low ranking by the search engine. These factors could be like the web page is poorly prepared. The content is of low quality or is a duplicate content, the web page is filled with advertisements and / or affiliate links, and the keywords are absent or are of very competitive nature. Other websites are better prepared and are occupying the top rankings for the same keywords, and so on.
So, even though your website is indexed you are unable to notice it in the SERPs because the pages are ranked very low. Hence, you may assume that your website is not indexed at all. The search engines also never inform the webmasters when they index websites.
Hence, your website must be optimized in the proper way to get better ranking in the search engines. The search engine optimization (SEO) techniques give excellent results if they are used properly. The properly performed on-page optimization and off-page optimizations techniques can really assist your web pages to jump up in the SERPs quickly, and can manage to even get better search engine result position by constantly applying better SEO techniques. So, to achieve high ranking in the search engine result pages for your chosen keywords, your web pages should be optimizes by following all the search engine guidelines.
5. Your website should not be incomplete
You must take care that all the web pages in your site have good content and the links on each page should be checked to make sure that they are not dead links. For checking the dead links, see that the link correctly points to an existing web page on the site. See that each outgoing link is also point to an existing web page on the internet.
Even if you take all precautions, later the outgoing link might end up as a dead link, not finding the page that earlier existed because its webmasters removed it for some reason. You may also remove a web page from your site that was linked by other page for some reason and this removal of a page results in a dead link on other page. Sometimes, you may add some script to change the web page names, possibly for getting better SEO results and then fail to update the links that pointed to these newly named pages.
Hence, you must often check your complete website for any dead links. There are many third-party programs that can check your website for any dead links, and then inform you the results. Use all the means available to ensure that your website is complete. The search engine crawlers also can report to you about the presence of dead links if you become a member of their parent site.
6. Watch your web page size
As majority of surfers, mostly from the third-world countries, do not use the ultra-fast broadband internet access. So, try and keep your web page size to less than 70 kb to make the page load faster on their computers that use the slow-speed dial-up internet connection. This page size includes the HTML code (about 12 kb), images (about 35 kb), and scripts (about 20 kb) for a complete web page. If your web page and supporting fines are very large in size, then it will make loading of your web pages very slow. The size of your web page also helps your search engine optimization campaign.
7. Use CSS instead of tables
Modern website development uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) instead of the tables. Tables are known to increase the web page size, whereas the CSS are very versatile in controlling many other tasks apart from keeping the page size small. So, use CSS to control page layouts across the entire website.
8. Use at least 300 words content on the web pages
Search engines needs around 300 word content to better understand what your web page is all about. This factor helps your web page to have better ranking in the search engine ‘s analysis and results than if your page has less number of words.
9. Get at least one back link to your web page
Google normally will not add your web page to its index unless the page gets a back link from another web page from its index. Either that back link should come from your home page which was indexed earlier, or it should come from another website. So, try and get as many back links to all your important pages.
You can write comments on different blogs from the same niche, or you can write posts on forums where you can add the link in your signature there. A link to your web pages from busy forums and blogs will be followed by the search engine’s crawlers and your pages will be indexed much faster.
10. Create Popular Websites
The more popular your web page, the more visits by the search engine’s crawlers. Do everything to make your web pages popular. The best method to make them popular is still through quality and relevant back links. The popular web pages are visited very frequently by the crawlers, sometimes even multiple times in one day.
11. Optimize Your Web Pages Regularly
Search engines, especially Google, uses algorithms for ranking the websites. They use hundreds of different criteria to weigh the web pages’ importance and rank them in the search engines’ databases. These algorithms are changed often and the web pages rankings also change accordingly. Hence, to keep your web pages’ in the top SERPs, always test and refine your SEO efforts and check the results.
12. Avoid Dynamic Web Pages
The top search engines do not indexing the dynamic pages, so do not use complicated scripts to create dynamic pages.
13. Web Page Password
If you use pages that require passwords or registrations to access the web pages, then the search engine crawlers will not be able to index them.
14. Use Dedicated IP Address
If your website is sharing the IP address with lots of other websites, then all the sites will have problems if one of those websites indulges in illegal activities and gets banned by the search engines.
15. Website Submission to Website Directories
Submit your website to only quality submission directories like the Yahoo!, DMOZ, etc. Such directories are visited by the search engine crawlers very often and your website’s chances of getting in to the search engines’ index increases. Getting your website listed with the various important search engines like Google, MSN, and Yahoo is an SEO task that will benefit your website for a long time.
