The .uk namespace is the Internet’s fourth most popular TLD (Top Level Domain) and second most popular ccTLD (country code Top Level Domain). As of 2012 there were over 10 million domains registered under .uk’s various guises such as .co.uk, .org.uk, and .me.uk. However, as of 10th June 2014, whilst these various guises, amongst others, are still available, Nominet opened up the namespace to let anyone register website addresses directly under the .uk ccTLD.
Over 330,000 registrations
The first year of .uk can only be described as a phenomenal success: over 330,000 new domains have been registered. This is a huge figuring considering that this is in an environment where 55% of small businesses having no web presence, and 58% having little or no digital engagement. With the advent of .uk, UK-centric companies have an opportunity to register a unique address that demonstrates their commitment to the UK marketplace.
