If you're concerned about the risks posed by the protocol's implementation in the server or client, keep in mind that IMAP is a lot more sophisticated protocol than POP, and thus the risks of an unsecured implementation are much larger.

POP is an email client's ancient method of receiving mail. It only allows you to download your Inbox, not any other folders, to your computer. When you download an email through POP, it's usually erased from Fastmail.

As switching from a POP3 to an IMAP connection can result in the deletion of your existing email, you should make a backup of your mailboxes to avoid losing anything crucial.

Gmail is based on the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocol. If you review it, it does, however, provide access to a POP mail server. Gmail, in a nutshell, provides both. Emails are handled differently by its POP and IMAP servers.
