WOW! Mark, you beat me to it! I wanted to express the same sentiments... about only 1 or 2 deaths due to this while there are thousands dying due to accidents...

One can really live to become quite old, only if the person learns to become very healthy and to drive very safely (while also keeping an eye on the idiots who have 'RIP' written all over their cars and themselves!)

Fear of ghosts kills while the ghosts themselves do not!

True, governments need some scapegoats to divert attention away from their failures! So dear people, don't give a damn to such news...

This is symbolic... think of cancer, accidents, depression, alcoholism... this 'poor' thing is not even a shadow of those killers...

    God Bless!

Ha, I seem to remember seeing a certain person, who we will call Mark, eat chicken just a few weeks ago Vegetarian diet indeed.

Anyway, the way the Media is hyping this up is really quite amusing. I get the impression that they are going to be very disappointed if someone in the UK doesn't die from it.

Apparently between 3000-12000 people die in the UK every year from flu, although mainly very elderly people. When you hear those numbers, is "swine flu" really anything to be getting worried over? Not at this stage

This is what happens in a slow news week

So in the US 98 people a day die from Flu.
UK (Presuming 12k die) 32 people die a day from Flu.

So far for Mexico 0.5 people a day (based on a year) have died from Swine Flu. I would doubt world wide its even up to 1 person.

Just to correct a few myths.

Face masks are only reasonably effective if the infected person is wearing one (i.e. it helps to stop them transmitting it). Face masks are entirely ineffective against protecting non infected people from it. Therefore if your not infected they are useless - that is just scare mongering.

Secondly, don't underestimate the dire situation that the world is in. It took over 6 weeks after what they think was the first infection in Mexico for officials to even realise what it was and declare an outbreak. Therefore in a few weeks time the same could happen in any other country - albeit with a lower death rate in developed countries such as the UK. The main reason it is hard to detect is due to the fact that the symptoms are much like the common flu. An independent health expert on the BBC two days ago, when the cases in Mexico were officially around 2,000 estimated that there was more likely to be around 200,000 suspected cases in Mexico alone and the reason his estimate was so high is due to the fact that many people will not report flu symptoms to their doctor or a hospital and try to ride it out as per normal and that many people who have seen doctors will have had their symptoms mistaken for common flu.

The concern should be in this country at the moment with the ill, immuno suppressed, the elderly and children who all have a much higher mortality rate.

I'm not trying to say that we're in crisis at the moment but I am trying to say I think this is being underestimated by some people. Don't forget states on US-Mexico border are contemplating closing their borders, some states in the US have declared disaster procedures to become effective, the European Union is considering banning all air travel to and from Mexico and France is considering a ban till the end of the crisis.

With regards to face masks, most of the hardware shops are now sold out of them. I only know this because my friend got the last packet from Homebase here.

WOW! Can anyone find out what's the world record for the longest sentence? I think I just found it! 87 Words before a full-stop mark!! ...

                  Hey David!
                  How did you manage that?!

                  P.S.:
Too bad this isn't anywhere near a world record! What Google says about the longest sentence is...

"The Rotters' Club holds the record for the longest sentence in English literature with 13955 words"
14K Words... Hmmm... that's almost more than 25 pages long, I suppose.

If I lived in a country with poor sanitation and health care I might be concerned. This is just a strain of the flu. The flu happens every year. I have had it and it sucks, but I am not running scared from the flu. Just take regular precautions during flu season, especially washing your hands regularly, and you should be OK. If you do experience flu-like symptoms, get to a doctor quickly. Any flu can kill you if you don't take it seriously.
