PBX is a system which is used to configure your own exchange system which allows you to integrate your phone lines into the system and create multiple extensions for individuals or departments reducing the cost of separate phone lines or numbers. These extensions can also be configured to use the same line for outgoing calls.

The word PBX originated when switchboard operators used to manage company switchboards by hand using cord circuits. The function PBX was to establish connections between two users via their telephone sets and maintains such connections until the users require them.
